Weapon-R Cold Air Intake

I just emailed Weapon-R about their cold air intake system, it works very differently from traditional CAI and removes the risk of injesting water etc. by keeping the intake filter in the engine. Also, they said that it will fit 5spd AS WELL AS automatic lancers!!! So finally there is a CAI for Autos!!!

heres the site...anybody tried this intake yet?

and here's kind of how it would look on a lancer:

It's not a particularly new concept. It's just a heat shield around the filter element. You could do the same thing by yourself with some elbow grease and Home Depot.

That "Cold Air Intake" sounds suspiciously like a Short Ram, since it's still in the engine compartment. Was the rep you talked to trying not to giggle?

Actually I believe there is some attachment that you mount underneath the front bumper and then connects back to the air filter in the engine compartment. That's where it gets it's "cold air" from. Kinda like a ram air intake. But I have yet to hear anyone say anything good about the longevity of foam filters which is what I believe Weapon R uses. I would stick with AEM or Injen for cold air intakes.

Agreed, although there are some higher quality foam filter elements that I'd trust, i.e. HKS and the like (paul, you're converting me a bit), but, for some of the lesser quallity (Weapon R), I'd be concerned about pieces breaking off and being sucked into the throttle body, which I have heard can happen on Weapon R's "Dragon" intake.

Yeah, I was only referring to Weapon R as I too would trust HKS. I'm just not to sure why Automatic guys are so set on wanting a cold air intake. I had the Injen and have since gone with Road Race's short ram and you really can't feel a differnce in performance. Both work very nicely.

In my defence I just thought for those with automatics that keep wanting a CAI it IS out there. Also, the ram air function attaches to the intake to give it the CAI effect also reducing the risk of sucking in dirt or water for bad weather or offroad applications. Finally, the dragon intake is a dual layer mesh cage and heat resistant polymer, not foam.

Not trying to make you defensive, just trying to help you out so that you don't go blowing money on a product that may give you a headache. If I had an automatic, there is no way in hell I'd go with Weapon R, just to get some cold air. Just stick with RRM or RMR's short ram and save yourself money and a possible headache.

My apologies on the Dragon intake... I forget which one it is that has a styrofoam element. But, I'd say that I can notice a difference between my Injen when it was a CAI and now that it's a short ram (I switched it for what was supposed to be a heavy rainy winter). In any case, it may not have a major OVERALL effect, but, I've noticed that the CAI adds the same low end power of the SRI, but there's an extra little bit of oomph at the top end.

Well the point is moot for me anyway...I bought a short ram from a different manufacturer with a K&N filter I just wanted to let people know about the Weapon R CAI especially those with automatics who could not otherwise have one...thanks for the input though!

i've heard the weapon r's dragon intakes sound really good and perform well too, one of my friends had one on a civic si but replaced it with a aem cai.

How about neither. That's some sort of V6 engine. Can tell by looking at the manifold.
