Engine hoses...

I just want to make sure I'm buying the right hoses for the right applications. I recently found out my egr valve hoses are cracking and need to be replaced. I'm not sure if they require special hoses or can I just use 4mm silicone vacuum hoses? So basically, anything that is tapped in the intake manifold needs to have vacuum hoses right? Except for the fuel line hoses that goes to the fpr and fuel rail... Any input would be great.

Yeah, my brother and I just did his entire IM in his Integra. Went from stock to Edelbrock. Had to get longer hosing. Just used PepBoys "cut-your-length" vacuum hose and have had no issues or problems to speak of. Just make sure that the inside tube diameter is the same too.

Yeah, go to PepBoys. They have the best prices on hose <- that sounds really funny by the way. Any ways, autozone, advance, etc sell pre-cut lengths but it's usually a bit more expensive. Just take the EGR hose in and compare it to what they have.

Is that the cause of your CEL?

Hey man, I thought that's the cause because I just cut off the cracked parts and reattached the hoses. But to my dismay, the cel still went on after 30 min. of driving. I wanted to clean all the path where the egr valve is attached to and replace all the vacuum lines that's attached to the egr hose. Or should I clean the egr sensor probe too? I'm still figuring out what's up with the p0401 error code.

Cutting to length is the way to be IMO, but without having seen their hose, I'd be wary of Pep Boys' quality. I've had nothing but bad experiences with Pep Boys, and I do what I can do avoid them...which is easy when you're not in possession of your car. I bought mine from Deyeme Racing and just it as needed. I don't know how their prices compare to some other places (I bought the hose nearly 2 years ago), but it stood up to a lot of abuse when my car was running. I'd had problems with aftermarket silicone hoses from another vendor tearing and failing.

Hobie, I'm also worried about pepboys/autozone/advanced auto parts stuff especially the hoses. They don't hold their value even for a 30 min, I bought hoses there for emergency and they are not as good as I expected. I talked with deyeme and those hoses came from Hose Techniques. http://www.hosetechniques.com. I will probably get these instead.

Yeah, they say that on their page. Though I haven't been driving my car in ages, the hoses held up while I was, and showed no signs of problems after a year of sitting, dismantling, rebuilding occasional idling and tuning. my problem with other hoses was that they seemed to become mushy and tear under heat, but the Hose Techniques ones, despite feeling a little softer at normal temps, never did that. My personal experiences/biasis are all I can speak from here.

I wasn't talking about the silicone hose they sell. That stuff is crap. I was talking about the OEM hose they sell. It's just as good as the stuff from the factory.

I'm not a fan of rubber hoses. Their tendency to dry rot is a much bigger and more sinister concern for me than even the problems I had with my first silicone hose kit.

Ok, I haven't had the cel since the last 2 hours I've been driving and I'm still using the stock hose. What I did was sprayed carb cleaner on the metal tube that connects to the hoses. Cross fingers hopefully the cel doesn't come on again!
