intake Mani help!

is it normal to have oil in ur intake mani?
i am in the process of swaping to a 4g93 mani and when i took out the original mani the runners are stained w/ oil

by the way my caris a 02 w/ 60,000 miles on it and was wondering if it could be 4 years of splash up?

It's probably not oil, but more like crap build up... There might be a small presence of oil since we have tube going from the valve cover to the intake.

If it's like gunk then yes, that's normal. If it's like a puddle of liquid, then you're getting too much blowby. Your ring(s) may be damaged or your engine may not have been broken in properly.

+1

when i swapped my manifold out i found excessive build up all over the place. i knew that it wasn't a big deal. as i looked closer and layed the manifold face down i found that cylinder 4 (where i previously have a severe misfire) had oil drip out. not an over abundence but enough to worry. started to take off the rail + injectors and found the ring was not seated properly. the ring was ok though reinstalled it on the new manifold and i haven't had a problem since. so yeah........

GUNK = NORMAL
OIL = NO BUENO

thanks for the advice its not puddles but semi gunkish stuff and i had the rrm piggy miss-fire issue a while back so thats prob what its from.

the new mani is great but i think i hear a whistling sound only around 3000 rpms then it goes away almost right away

and after i drove it the first time the idle was changing from 700-600 constintly but after i reset the ecu it stoped

do these two things mean i have a leak or just a weird considence?

the low RPM misfire associated with the piggy is not what is causing that build up. that is normal in any car. i had a misfire where i was arcing enough to crack the ceramic on the NGK plugs in the same cylinder....yeah i had issues with that. all cars get a carbon build up and other gunky stuff in the intake mani, throttle body, egr system, so on and so forth.

as for the bumpy idle. the ECU needs to relearn with the new manifold in the car. you did the right thing by reseting it. that should help eleviate the problem.

the whistling is something you need to investigate more thoroughly. is it only under load conditions? does it whistle if you rev it under the hood while in neutral?
if you reset your ecu and the lumpy idle returns along with the whistling my first guess would be a vacuum leak. check all of the hoses and make sure everything is on snuggly and not cracked (or that anything wasn't accidently left unconnected). if there isn't any vacuum leaks, check to make sure that you aren't getting a high pressure leak between the head and the mani, and/or between the mani and the throttle body. make sure all the bolts are torqued properly. then work from there

after i reset the ecu the lumpy idle went away and its not really a whistling noise but a small hiss if it was a leak between mani and head it would be loud right at least loud enough that i would be sure its a noise right?

but then again my car makes all kinds of noises

You want to hear noises? Come for a ride in my car. If you have a leak you'll want to get that flange ground/planed or to replace the gasket (if you haven't already put a new one in). You don't want leaks because you'll bleed off boost. Better to iron that sort of thing out pre turbo.

it gets lumpy with your lights off? that's a little strange. how many miles are on the car? have you had any problems with the alternator lately?
