Backpressure & Exhaust Question

Hey guys, I have yet another noob question, and any answers are as always appreciated.

I have very limited funds, and wanted to change the stock exhaust on my ES. I saw a Magnaflow muffler online, has a 2.25" inlet and a large 4" tip. Since it is a 2.25" and not a 2.5" piping, I'm assuming this won't really mess with backpressure. Am I wrong? Anyone who could shed some light on backpressure and how it is affected by putting a new muffler on like this would be a big help.

Also, anyone with a large exhaust tip have words of wisdom about the sound? I don't want a whiny ricer noise, or an unbearable idle drone. I figured it's a Magnaflow, so it may sound better than the cheap e-Bay ricer exhausts. I may be wrong, though.

Longwinded, I know, sorry. Thanks in advance for the help though, guys.

Simple - the larger the piping, the less backpressure you get. Low-end torque = backpressure (more of one, more of the other; less of one...)

You should be fine with that size. It doesn't get raspy at all. Hell, a lot of Civics sound like that because they're 1.3L running out 3" piping.

If all you're upgrading is the muffler you'll be fine. 2.25" is about the best you can get for a catback on a lancer, for both NA and most turbo applications.

So you're saying 2.25" piping will sound ricier than 2.5" piping? That seems counterintuitive to me, and discouraging. Maybe I misunderstood you though.

He drives an evo, not a lancer, so maybe that rule is true for his car but it sure as hell isn't true for ours.

hey i got an eBay muffler and it sounds like the evo 8 they modified in the bonus features of the fast and the furious. doesnt sound ricey at all. is really deep. and its only axleback. i love the sound when it backfires. can't wait to get my no restrictions header and free-flowing exhaust.

I'm not sure that was sarcasm. Was it? Really... I'm not sure.

No, I think he's serious.

PS - it's probably not a "backfire" per se. Backfiring is bad for your car. You're probably just getting the "snap crackle pop" in your exhaust.

If he isn't serious I am. Back pressure is over-rated on our cars, free flow all the way. Header. TP, catback and you are good to go.

I strongly disagree. If you want any kind of realistic driveability (ie. sub 5000 RPM power) you need backpressure. On an NA lancer a test pipe is completely useless and simply isn't worth the sound, smell and legal issues.
