does anyone know if the vavle cover for the U.S. Lancer is aluminum???

Yes, I believe it is, but don't quote me on that.

 

valve cover is a lightweight steel- probably a stainless variety- unless magnets are suddenly attracted to aluminum.

I'd avoid taking that laquer- or whatever- layer off. Stainless steels only polish with very harsh chemicals or very, very fine emerypapers. You'd have to work from 100 grit to 2000 wet to get a good polish and even then some engine oil or a fingerprint that gets baked on will ruin all of your work. Also, sanding in those crevises would be a serious *****, and you don't want a ghetto looking ride
