well i have to say after a week now, my nifty so called "mod" is working a dream.

I was sitting at a light, minding my own business, listening to the radio. Then i hear a faint clanging sound, i look to my left and see a RICED TO THE MAX civic sitting next to me, with a bunch of teenage ******s in there. All staring at me while the driver revved his engine up, and made his muffler clang from side to side on his bumper.
I laughed it off at first, but the idjit kids kept "whooping" as he revved his engine. So with the calmness and coolness of James Bond, i put my left foot on the brake, put my car in neutral, and revved my car up to 5000.
Instantly all the ****** kids turned around and looked at the driver, who simply listened in awe at the deep sound my STOCK engine was making, as i calmly drove away they all shuffled around trying to see what muffler i had on, and making sure i had decals on the back of my car to give evidence of what mod i must have under the hood. But of course all they read was the word "Lancer"

i burst out laughing as i drove home.

Just thought i would share that story with you, as an example of how sweet the intake sounds just from pulling off half of it. lol.

The air box is there to just muffle the howls, whistles and clacking valves that 90% of buyers don't want to hear.

its not annoying. it just sounds nice and deep when the engine is revved up.

yea but now that that plastic is gone, its no longer 100% cold air going in to your intake, its a mix of engine heat air, and air coming from your little stock duct thingy, you might actually have a performance loss because the filter is still restricting air flow, but now the air is hot, and restricted

You know what sounds even better? that nice sucking sound a spooling turbo makes And having the intake filter right next to the firewall drivers side so when all the windows are up in my car i can hear that b*tch sucking in air like a fire breathing dragon But i do agree, removing the stock airbox does make the car sound more angry. If you get a nice mild exhaust it will balance nicely too. I had a cold air intake and a magnaflow cat back and the magnaflow is just quiet enough that you can still hear the intake sucking in at WOT.

Ps - completely off topic but me and my turbo civic friend were talking about this yesterday....the chunky exhaust tone of WRX's and EVOs accelerating....that kind of choppy sound....he said "oh its cuz the wrx's have the boxer engine", but i said yeah but the evo does it too, and i sware i've heard it on other turbo cars sans boxer engines, so what causes this tone. It sounds so F'ing mean

My friend did something like this on his 2000 nissan sentra gxe. He raised the top fo the intake box a little so it would get more air and sound like he had an aftermarket intake. He ended up with carbon deposits in the intake manifold...Well thats what the dealer said at least...Sounds cool, but I would just wait and get a real intake...

If i take the front of my air intake box off, and somehow keep the filter in place against the back half of the box
but also leave the air funnel thing in the front, to bring in cold air still.

will this slow my car down at all? improve it?

im only doing this cos i know it will sound cool, also until i get some money to get a whole new intake kit.

What do you guys think?

Im planning on doing this in a few hours when i get done at work, so some quick answers would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks

oh crap., sorry, i forgot about them. I have a new intake in now.

But its not a big deal to do. you could do it yourself in a few minutes. All you need are zip ties.
Just remove the intake funnel/duct thingy.
Unclip the intake box. Un bolt the front part of the intake box from the car, it has 2 bolts.
Throw that away.
Zip tie the filter to the back half of the intake box.
then zip tie the whole thing to a secure location, i used that little metal pipe that runs from the power steering fluid. its pretty sturdy.
Last step, put the funnel/duct back in place. And wrap a zip tie around it and into the front hole where one of the intake bolts were, just to secure the back of it in place, do not tie it too tight though

and there you have it.
Its easy to figure out. i can do a "step by step" if you want?

Dude, you don't need the funnel part of the stock intake on. In fact I took that off like a week after I bought my car.

In any event, I did this to my car only instead of zip tieing it I used a silicone/rtv kinda stuff and basically glued the air filter in place. I have a cold air intake coming to me in 2 more days but if I had known about this I wouldn't have bought it! All I've done to my exhaust was replace all the piping after the second cat with 2 1/4 piping and throw a muffler on it. With this little mod my top speed in second went from 46 to 52mph! It also has a DEEP growl from 4000rpm-4500rpm now! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WITHOUT AFTER MARKET INTAKE!

I don't know who is in charge of this site but this should be made a "STICKY" for new people cause this works great!

Hehehe.... just don't get pulled over trying to here the growl after 4000rpm!

well you keep the funnel on to bring cold air in. I took mine off but i noticed a loss in performance in high RPM's so i stuck it back in and it seems to have done the trick.

how much does it cost for your exhaust thingy?

Dude, without that funnel being hooked directly up to your intake box or intake tubing, it isn't doing anything. I don't know if you noticed but when you close the hood there is like barely any gap at all between the funnel and the hood . It is aimed directly at the hood which allows it to suck in hardly any air. That is why when I took the funnel off of my intake box it made a difference. Not much but it did. Either way, now that I have my new Ghetto Ram Air I couldn't be happier. It's so much fun to when I hit 4,000 and it starts to make it's bumblebee roar! Actually, I don't know why but it completely changes tone at 4,100rpm like the same way it does in a Honda when Vtec kicks on. Weird.

go to RMR's website,. look at thier intake kit
http://www.rodmillenstore.com/prodin...artID=RMRLA011

if the funnel was pointless they wouldn't go out of thier way to make a heat shield for it to attach to.

I just did this little mod a couple of days ago...SWEET! Love the sound you get and its funny when my friends ask what i did and i pop the hood and show them the ghetto-ness. By doing this mod are u losing a bit of power? Is the engine running leaner and could resetting the ecu help fix this a bit?
