noise in idle....

Well I tried posting this question in the tranny and drivetrain category but no one is responding to it so I'll try it here. When my car is idleing after it is has gotten good and warmed up it will start making a rattling noise. When you put the clutch in it stops immediately. It is even lowder when the A/C is on... in fact it is down right obnoxious when the A/C is on. I talked to a friend a couple weeks ago who owns an Elantra and he said his car does exactly the same thing and he thinks it's the throw out bearing wiggling. That sounds like a pretty viable idea but what causes that and how do I make it go away? More importantly is it a precursor to something else that is going to mess up?

Well cars run a little smoother under high idle (cold) when they warm up the idle drops a little low and you get some vibrations. When you push the clutch in I "believe" you incorporate the brake booster and that bumps the idle up a few RPM to compensate for vacuum loss (if you have solid engine mounts and a manual you can totally feel the difference when at idle with the clutch in and with it out) (cant see RPM change on the tach but on an AFC you can see changes) and enough to stop the rattle. Whats the rattle? Start looking for loose exhaust sheilds.

I have the exact same problem with my '05 evo - it happened when I readjusted the clutch pedal - it never happened before that either. Also, I hope others have this problem and can shed some light on the situation - a throw out bearing wiggling sounds like what is going on with my car so it might be yours as well.

it is your throw out bearing. the only way to fix it is to pull the transmission and replace it on the clutch fork. they are about $90 from mitsubishi. no real way around it. i had the same problem. its a 3-4 hour job for me. i havent pulled an evo tranny before so i cant help with any tips on those.

Yeah that's what I figured it was. I guess unless anyone else who has this problem or has had this problem thinks it is or can be dangerous I'll probably just ignore it until I have the money to redo the whole clutch system. Thinking about going with a good Stage 1 kit from maybe ACT.

you will probably still need to buy the throwout seperately. my ACT kit didn't come with one.

04-05's revert back to the mirage style TOB (external)

phil i think you may be confusing the throwout bearing with the slave cylinder. i have an 02 and the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing. which sucks because i think i have a leaky one. the only types of throw out bearing i know of are for the push down pressure plate diaphram which is typical on most cars. or like on the wrx a pull type pressure plate where the throwout bearing clicks into the clutch fingers allowing the forks movement to pull it away from the flywheel.

I read this in the mirage/lancer compatibility thread:

"the TOB also match between the mirage and the 04+ lancer. this is because in the 02-03 lancer, the TOB and clutch release fork were a single assembly. in the 04+, it switched back to the multi part assembly which came from the mirage trannies. MD722744 for the throw out bearing."
