It is a 2 coil ignition. each coil runs two cylinders. The coil pack builds up a spark and delivers it to the cylinder that needs it. The coil packs are on top of the motor w/ spark plug wires running out of them.

They're the black boxes on top of your valve cover. frchgl basically explained the ignition system. It's called wasted a wasted spark ignition system.

Better.

Less moving parts to wear out. No distributor cap and rotor.

Makes for lower emissions. With the waste spark ignition, 2 cylinders fire at once, like 1&3, when 1 is nearing the top of its compression stroke, and 3 is dumping its exhaust gasses. It helps to burn any unburned fuel in the exhaust.

At least that's my understanding of it. I had 2 DSMs in the last 8 years with the distributorless ignition, and one with a distributor.

So here's dumb question. Is there anything better? Can there be an improved design in the aftermarket that will work better than the stock coils? I'm talking like MSD or AEM or something.

you can get individual coil packs if you have a standalone fuel management system (EMS). like the aem can do it i believe..

Boni already answered that really. With the right engine management it doesn't matter what type of coilpack you use as far as I know. The EMS can handle up to 6 direct fire coilpacks just FYI. I certainly wouldn't recommend getting a standlone just for a neat ignition system though.

Msd has actually came out with a new ignition box for distributorless systems... using that and their upgrade coils made for waste spark systems you can upgrade your system. I have yet to see this setup on any DIS(wastespark systems).

AEM has a new setup out as well. I believe it's called CDI but don't quote me on that. I know MSD designed their setup to work with stock ecu's... but i don't know about the AEM ignition system.

I'd recommend calling both of them to find out more in detail.

Won't the Magnacore wires from RRM help to improve anything?
