Cuttin' down a shifter is actually pretty common. I personally wouldn't do it but whatever floats your boat man.

Just info for you. Short shifter pivots on a ball. Shortening top above ball ruins leverage a bit. Kind of out of balance. A machined shifter rod is lengthened below the ball and shortened above the ball.

Your shifter is a lever, the pivot ball being the fulcrum. The reason the input side of the lever is longer is because consumers will complain if they have to make an effort to move the shifter...(god forbid..they could have bought an automatic) so this along with top weighting the shifter makes shifts more smooth. A short throw shifter repositions the fulcrum making the lower portion of the lever longer. The distance ratio of the lever changes, lowering your mechanical advantage, but decreasing the distance your hand has to travel while at the same time increasing the distance the lower portion travels. A by product is that the lower portion also travels much faster in respect to your hand motion, because it must cover a greater radius in the time it takes you to shift. Cutting off your shifter at the top will decrease the radius your hand has to travel to make a shift, but by only an insignificant figure. Simply doing this will not make your shifts significantly shorter or faster. It will only make your shifter itself shorter....which may look cool but misses the whole point.

yea but i mesured out the "short throw" on my car and it did make the shift shorter by like 2 inches or so how is this defeting the purpose? even if you did shift at te same speed witht he cut down shifter it still is gonna get there faster because you dont need to travel as far maybe it doesent get the whole thing but when it is cut down it saves a little doese it not? the whole poont in modding something is to make it better faster stronger ect. cutting down the shifter reduced throw travel thus making it better and/or faster correct me if im wrong just tryin to figuer this whole thing out im not sayin that you yourselvs are wrong it is just maybe im coming from somewere3 diferent

RPW Short Shifters

RPW does a short shifter setup that does teh followign

(A) Is shorter around 30mm on the length of the shifter
(B) Is lengthened after the pivot point to reduce the throw

This combination will obviously reduce the overall throw of the shifter.

But we also modify the side movement as well so that the shifting pattern sideways is shorter and hence you have our Rally Spec shifter assembly.

We are now producing these for the 2002 Lancer models for those interested.

b&m shifter

Road race sells a B&M short throw that advertises a reduction of about an inch. After I put that on I found about a half inch reduction (at best), but the shifter does look good-good and low on the center console.

Sounds like I should have waited for the RPW shifter.

1/2" in each direction should total 1". Dunno how you measured or how they measure though. ::shrugs::
