OBDII Code 335 & 340

My '03 ES stalled about two weeks ago, but restarted and today it did the same thing several times and threw an check engine code 335(Crankshaft Position A Sensor Malfunction) and code 340(Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction).

Has anyone gotten this problem with their 2002-2206 Lancers and how much did it cost to get fixed ?

The problem started around the same time when I replace my sparkplugs, but that could be coincidence.

Funny, actually not really, but I'm in the same boat... I've gotten that code 340 error twice! Both those times the wife was driving, and I couldn't help. But she stopped in the mall parking lot, parked it for about an hour, and then came out and it won't start. About 5 mintues later it starts (after many attempts). Threw that code.

Happened again the same way about 2/3 months later. Won't start for about 5 minutes, then off she went!

Now, the most recent time happened with me in the car. Came out after a couple hours of sitting and nothing. Only thing, I can hear a clicking noise... We try just sitting around for about 5 minutes and just try starting it every minute or so. Okay, I've had it!!! Pop the hood! I open up the engine fuse box and pull all the relays and tap on them with my S&W Swat knife (yeah, don't mess with me!) and replace. Try to start it and nothing... Okay, I'll try locating the source of that noise. I get to the passenger side of the car and prepare to lean down towards the CPS and the wife cranks it! HELL YEAH!

So, I couldn't locate the source of the noise...but I do believe tapping on those relays helped? Possibly?

That's about it. I was going to replace the T-belt last weekend and check out the condition of the sensor itself while under there. But the compressor or the impact gun took a dump on us! Oh well...

Well try to troubleshoot this together!

Best of luck to yah, EdT...

Hmmm, I noticed that the OEM battery(Guam International Auto - Distributed by Mistu)) is also about to go too, I checked the indicator and it is blank not blue, I charged it with a charger and it is still blank so it is the battery and not the alternator, so now I think it also might be the battery thats causing the gremlins, but funny thing is that the battery warning indicator did not go on and the "service engine" indicator did ! Could a faulty battery cause the ECU to throw a wrong code ?

The thing I don't feel secure about this is that it stalled while I was driving and not when it was parked.

^So your car turned off while driving? and it threw those codes? I also have a "black" indicator on my battery. But I really doubt that that is the problem...

Don't think the spark plugs would cause such a problem, but getting another set for $8 wouldn't hurt I guess...

Is yours an auto or manual tranny? I'm auto btw...

Yup, it died while driving and threw thosse codes after I tried to restart it the second time.

Mine is an auto.

I changed my plugs two weeks back and about 3 days later I started to experience this problem with the engine starting and dying while parked. This week it died while I was driving, but restarted after two attempts to crank it.

I changed the battery just in case and it is about that time anyways for the added peace of mind, could be the ECU is not getting a steady current and throwing erratic codes.

If it dies and throws that code again, I am going to the dealer, I don't want to buy the sensor and then it has not warranty or if the problem still persist they will have to be responsible for it.

Will add an update if I experience anything else.

Please everybody post the mileage on the cars. This could be mileage related, especially when we are talking about batteries that are going bad. My guess is it could be a timing belt that is causing some issues.

50,000kms its still a baby ! You could be onto something with the belt, I hear one of the belts slipping a little when the engine is cold, but normally belts are good for 100,000 to 120,000kms.

I've just hit 78k, and the car didn't want to start the other day (has to be CPS related). Actually drove 2 hrs to pick up the parents from an airport in NC and parked it in the call phone lot. About an hour later I get the call and turn the key and nothing. OH ****. I'm 2+ hrs away and the car decides to crap out! Turn it again, nothing. Wait a few seconds and on the 3rd or 4th turn it slowly turns over. BUT NO CEL! I've got a new T-belt to put on, but just need a stronger air compressor or impact gun to do it!

Still pondering a new battery soon; just a low budget month and no funds for it...

Ok, problem came back again today after 7 weeks since the last episode, car stalled while I was driving and CEL came on

Tried starting it, but would only crank and not start. Waited 15 minutes and it started again. Weather was humid and was raining for the past 2 days.

I think it maybe the coil packs that are dying. I had them go on my old Chevy Cavalier before.

Anyone have any feedback on this issue yet ? there were several owners with the same problem.

I called the dealer with the two codes and they say there is a technical bulletin for the camshaft sensor. Will bring in my car today to let them check it out. Will keep you guys updated.
