30,000 Mile Service OZ Rally
Hey guys. I just came up on my 30K mile service and called the dealer to see what all needed to be done. The guy in Beaverton told me that they change the spark plugs, check the cooling system, trans system, and hook it up to a laptop and bring everything back to stock and fix my RPM's? anyway, I asked the kind man what it would cost me, and like I thought... $540 for the whole thing.....
$540 for a tune up and 30K mile service are you kidding me? I told them that I do the oil myself and can have Jiffy Lube change the tranny fluid, to which he stopped me and said that mitsu uses special trany fluid that only they have... right... how about 80/90. why has no one else heard of this special and magical fluid that I can buy for a reasonable $60/gallon....
anyway, I am changing the plugs myself, and having Jiffy lube do the tranny fluid with normal fluid that the rest of the world uses (if you ask me, it doesn't even need it at 30K). Then having them check and fix if needed the AC system for $100 instead of $300. Mitsu quoted me 2 hours of service.... Jiffy lube.... not even 1. I get tired of people trying to take advantage of other people and I guess I am just venting. Anything else you guys think I should check and or replace for 30,000 miles while I'm at it?

At 30k, I think I replaced the plugs, cleaned the air filter, and got a new air freshner... LOL
Not a fan of Jiffy Lube, but I'd keep an eye on them if possible to see if they even change the fluid.
BTW, are you auto or std?

I know for a fact automatics HAVE to have mitsubishi OEM transmission fluid. I do not know about manuals though. I would get the mitsubishi stuff or one of the higher quality fluids. And 30k miles you shouldn't need to change the trans fluid yet. Only every 50k miles i beleive.
What I would do is, check air filter and clean as needed
Oil change
spark plugs/wires
maybe a run of some fuel system cleaner or what not.
As far as the spark plugs and wires go, go to your local auto parts store that stocks NGK (such as O'reilly) and ask for V-power NGK copper plugs. They are DIRT cheap ($1.50 a pop) and as most people know copper is the best overall conductor of electricity. They don't last QUITE as long. Still at least 20k miles or so. But that is their only downfall.
Then get these spark plug wires and your set

Manual tranny - do the tranny fluid yourself. There's a nice how-to here on EvoM. Something good like Royal Purple or Mobil1 will really change the way your car shifts.
Any plugs will do. It's like oil - as long as the plugs are clean and changed when they should be, they'll work fine.
I definitely agree on the spark plug wires. That NGK set is a great deal.

Good god. You can do the stuff yourself for about $100. Plugs are nothing - maybe 20 bucks and the plug wires iufan found are about another 25 bucks.
The tranny fluid ( according to the owner's manual ) is GL-4 spec and should be changed every 25k. I get mine changed by a jiffy lube-type place and they have GL-5 ( synthetic version ) and they charge about 50 bucks. I think the car shifts very smoothly and i have no complaints. Cooling system - all you need to do is buy some radiatior test strips from autozone and check it that way. If it passes, you're good to go.
The only thing you're going to get from the dealership is pounded in the ***.
- IuFan.. are those plug wires you found better than Magnecor wires? How big are they?

They are stock size, maybe SLIGHTLY bigger. A little more shielding. They are nice wires, plus cheaper than OEM I believe
. No need for magnacore unless you are running high boost but then you figure, if you upgrade to the magnacore you are only replacing 2 cylinders wires. The coil pack on the other 2 cylinders limits your ignition in that regard.

sicky! ok well it sounds like I'll just stop by Jiffy and have them do the tranny, and everything else I can do myself. he quoted me $40 which is no biggie. I will do the plugs myself, but the write up in the lancer how to section link is broken. anyone got a walk through?
Pull out spark plug wires, unbolt 2 things from each coil pack. Take them off (remember where each coil pack goes and where each wire goes etc.). Take out spark plugs with socket. Check gap on new spark plugs. Put anti-seize stuff on the threads. Put it, tighten back down, put coil packs and wires back on
Pretty easy stuff. Takes about 15 minutes

awesome. I just stopped by NAPA and picked up the V-power NGK Spark Plugs... The number on them is Stock number 6953 and the code below it is BKR5E-11 for single overhead cam. anyone know if those are the correct ones? NAPA only had the turbo lancer in the database? no base lancers which I found odd.
