Custom Intake Manifold

Has anyone ever tried casting a new intake manifold? Or more to the point, does anyone have designs for a new intake manifold? I cast aluminum as a hobby (up to 15 lbs per melt) and would like to give it a shot if anyone has a design. It would most likely need to be a 2 peice design (due to pattern restrictions), but might just perform better than the stock manifold.

Let me know!

The only "custom" IM I've seen on here was some guy in WA state that had something fab'd up for his setup. Good luck!

Casting one would be a good idea but you'd of course have to build a model of one. I've cast aluminum before but never did anything cast iron. Cast iron needs to be heated to 2300 degrees fahrenheit, that is it's melting point. If you try this, let me know how it goes, I'm very curious. What have you made from aluminum?

I wish I had some CAD skills and could do something for you. You never know though, someone here has to have the skills to do this.

using aluminum would be the lighter choice, but it would not take long for me to whip up a oil fired furnace to melt iron (or maybe a coupela(sp?)). Pullies, bushings, knobs... I am currently working on drill press and shaper builds. I don't have a large shop, but it works for me (for now).

As for the design of the manifold, a multi-runner design that bolts together would be easy, but the plenum would be the hard part. The volume and shape of both the runners and plenum would be the deciding factors. I don't currently use CAM, so all the finishing would be done manually (or by another shop with CAM).

Its a worth while project, I just haven't delved into the mathmatics required to put it together.

Thanks!
