~~~ War on exhaust restriction - Header
When I began the exhaust projects for the turbo and the standard lancer, I was pretty sure that Mitsu really thought this setup out. And you know from a corporate, mass produced, stable point of view i think they have. But with what my science guy "Japanese Wonder" has been telling me. their efforts to hit emissions goals, exhaust noise limits both externally and internally for ride enjoyment. They have have succeeded. But when it comes to promoting that 152Hp stamp which to be honest just tells you how good the engine performs if you were going to hook it up as stand alone generator or better yet as a lawnmower.
Its perverse to think that you are really getting those 152 horses at the wheels, but the question is how much power is there really and how close is it to 152.
The bet with "J wonder" was that give him the ability to fool around with just "exhaust works" give him the performance enhancement of a CAI and or SRI, and he could increase performance by 12%. everything else is engine intake / exhaust and back, he was confident that the 4b11's version of MIVEC would do all the work for him when he is done. We worked it out so there was a formula to follow in regards to both HP and TQ gains. No piggyback system for this? he said no, Mivec is different this time around, its more dynamic. I laughed, but agreed, then he showed me his numbers, his engineering models and his ideals, and my laugh turned into a frown. I might losed this bet. lets put it this way.
If restriction was the guy dressed in white in this bruce lee gif, then restriction is about to be owned.
but remember restriction and backpressure dont have to be both labelled the enemy here.
With my personal experience with the Dual Exhaust project, after going thru so many different ways of setting it up, what we choose was, in my words the best possible setup in terms of getting more power across the power band without taking any hits in the low or high end. it was about finding the right balance to get the right amount of back pressure.
After getting my exhaust running, it was very clear that I have set foot in a completely different feeling car. Running a CVT transmission, I was extremely feed up with the low end performance. I constantly and I mean constantly used the paddle shifters to get myself up and over that fence for availible power. (And i will talk about this more in my offical review for it) I needed to use it to get on the highway, passing on the highway, or just for a nice peepy start. I assumed, that Mitsu goal here was for fuel econ, not racing. so i let it go and accepted it as the norm. After getting into this car after the exhaust my outlook has changed, big time, a comment my girlfriend made to me today drove the point home. She hates it that i use the paddle shifters, every time she gives me the look, she makes me feel as if I just finished clubbing a baby seal to death. My defense is "What, it came with the car, right?" lol its worked so far.
But she pointed out, when was the last time i used the paddle shifter?, and you know I couldnt recall. the car drives as if I beleive I really do have 150 or so horses or 140's of torque. Secondly, i cant remember when the last time was that i felt like i was struggling to get the car up to speed and had to replant my foot on the peddle to get it to go. One thing that is clearly different is when in a gradual acceleration the car RPM now levels off at 2250 - 2000 RPM in the accleration stage. Before it was very hard to get the car to stay above 2000 on a gradual accleration, giving you the impression the car was struggling.
And it was true, part of it was MIVEC optimizing it self to the flow changes, and i personally beleive JW about MIVEC being smart. The difference was felt soon after the exhaust was changed, Maiden flight i guess you could say. To be honest I was feeling as if something was wrong. I drove it around and at idle, the RPM needle was doing dance I have never really seen before except with some of those 2000 watt competition Audio systems on a poor stock alternator. but you get the idea.
when you let go of the brake and just let the car coast, i felt like the car was jerking 1 or 2kmph faster and slow faster and slower. like being on the start of a roller coaster moving up a hill. The idle felt sloppy, and when we ran the GTECH no it, the results were all over the place. mind you, the weld points were still hot. my friend told me, give it 50kms. so i did. Idle is stable, cold starts or warm starts. and the low end is great.
Anyways bring this full circle, with where to go next. he and a few other friends are looking over the exhaust manifold feeding numbers into their computers and look at the idea of a shorty header. The idea was born sometime ago when i brought it up, but I was much to busy with this exhaust project. its not as simple as a bolt on, straight thru muffler, he said you still need back pressure or you get more problems then its worth if its not done right.
Why a shorty header? why not pillage and plunder and strip off the unsightly Cat, cause CAT = Restriction. Not so fast, some say.
Some beleive that many new CAT setups are not as restrictive as you may beleive. Plus since there are some green hearted drivers out there, its important to them to be a green as possible while you drive around an air poluting beast. I simply stand up and say, .... cough cough... buy a hybrid, cough.
There seems to be alot of room behind that engine to work with to come out with a combo that makes for seemles connection with the cat and optimize flow just a bit better. Of course, this is in no way to compare to what a true full header can do in the way of performance.
This chapter is a too be continued as hear back from the round table about the ability to work.
keep you posted...
hey what can i say I am a one man show, lol labor is tight in these parts.
I am trying to turn this into a graphic novel... lol still looking around for an image of a man clubbing a baby seal
and would you beleive i am actually in the process of wrting a real novel, strange but true lol
ya i used the wagner picture because there are rare pictures of shorty headers for small 4 banging engines. all the other pictures are for huge V8 muscle cars lol
unfotunately there is no huge money in shorty headers for small cars like ours. one of the reasons why wagner went under a few years ago.
The ideas is being floated, they are studying the current mitsubishi one, how knows there may not be anything to salvage using a shorty. But I am one that doesnt like removing CATS due to the hassle with the law and failing emissions.
Great post, but I have a hard time taking a review of an exhaust sytem seriously without a second opinion. How bout you send it my way and I'll make time in my busy schedule to back up everything you posted. And then I'll send it back.........I swear
if i can hold this shop to its word with dyno testing I can have an idea of what the performance figures are.
Just looking around for someone with a straight thru aftermarket muffler installed to add perspective.
Mitsubishi Lancer 2008 EVOSOUL Dual Exhaust - High Quality Sound
Or look at it on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C612DE4ogms
Your gonna love it, turn your bass up, turn that subwoofer up too.
this is the start up from couple of yards away, then i reverse up to the camera bit , then drive away, low speed to across the street, turn around and drive towards.
The exhaust procasts but to me its not overly agreesive, but I think i made an understandment when i said it was 6 out of 10 loudness. maybe a full 7.5
Tell me what you think.
I am currently uploading the file to my server so if it doesnt work right away give it 10 minutes, its a 17 meg file
had to preserve the quality for audio
