Question DOHC upgrade

I don't know if I'll ever forgive Mitsubishi for not making at least the OZ/Rally and RMR editions with DOHC. Anyway, if anyone has a reliable source for these upgrades please follow-up! I have too many connections for Honda and Mazda performance parts and not enough upgrades for this Lancer. If Ralli-Art would ever realize the market they could have in the US, we might have acceptable upgrades. I am tired of the mediocre aftermarket parts for this car.

Technically the RMR IS the OZ with a intake and a couple glam mods. ...which is pretty much an LS with a few options and no available ABS which is more or less an ES. Until a couple people on the forums dubbed them RMR Lancers I'd never even thought of them as anything other than a glorified OZ...I'll give it to them though, if the other models are different enough for their own names then the RMR title is ok by me at least.

Anyway, I guess what I was getting to saying was the fact that there's no DOHC in the OZ doesn't suprise me, but the fact that it's not in all of the Lancer models does. As far as aftermarket...we've made a LOT of progress for such a new model line in the US. Give it time and give manufacturers and retailers a demand.

Lancer underrated

I look at the Acura RSX and the Subaru WRX and already GReddy, Apexi, AEM, etc. all have parts available even though these are new vehicle models in the US. Even the Honda S2000 has more parts available. I think for some reason Mitsubishi didn't want these '02 Lancers to have any considerable power, so then everyone would run out and buy an Evo next year. I won't buy one for the simple fact that I will run my Lancer faster than 250 with only a turbo. I was dyno'ed at 154hp after my intake and exhaust upgrades and I am curious as to it's power after I installed my new spark plugs and plug wires. With a turbo, intercooler, BOV, new fuel rail and bigger injectors, exhaust manifold, enlarged throttle body, not to mention DOHC, I could run at about 300hp easily(I am most likely underestimating). Most people who buy an Evolution are not going to modify it since they think they already have a fast enough car. For $28k those are ok. I bought my car for less than $18k and $10k later I will beat Evo's all day. It's those rich guys who have nothing to do with their money except spend it that worry me. An Evo with $10k worth of mods scares me.

I don't think DOHC is necessarily the answer. They could have tried and fit in the 2.4L engine from the Eclipse as their first option if you ask me. Needless to say, the OZ Edition was never truly designed as a performance platform. At least not initially. Mitsubishi they knew they were going to attract many buyers on style alone and, considering the number of OZ owners on this board, they were correct. On that note, the Lancer as we know it now was meant to perhaps see how the public would react to a sporty four door sedan. With this knowledge, perhaps Mitsu is seeking to warm up the American palate to the true Lancer, the Evo. However, with the (what I perceive to be) success of the Lancer here, in the coming years we'll see the development of a mid-level Lancer platform, with perhaps, like I said, the Eclipse engine. Mitsubishi would be able to offer performance and styling on a variety of levels. As for Ralliart, supposedly when the Evo lands the US will see its own division of the company but that's yet to be seen. I wouldn't expect to much from Ralliart on the current Lancer since Ralliart Japan focuses on their Lancer, the Cedia, which is by far and away, a much different car from the one we have hear, at least mechanically.

all of the cars you listed have been in the US longer than the lancer. give it a little more time and we should see more parts. I think mitsu
underrated this engine to begin with. I've been working on cars for almost twenty years now and this engine feels stronger than 120h/p.
I am curious if any of the DOHC heads will fit this engine.

You need to remember, the RSX and the Rex were initially designed as performance machines, unlike the current Lancer which people are trying to be turn into one. The RSX Type S and the Rex are formidable cars in their stock trim and they can only get better, same with the S2000 which is perhaps one of the singular best 4 cylinder NA'd cars out there. As for the Lancer, it lands smack dab into Civicland as the competition. It was not designed as a performance platform, but rather as a good all around car, and something fun for tuners to play with.

The new age wrx is in it's third model year and stuff is finally coming out for it...came out as a 2001model in every other country but the us. Look at the lancer...if you were a manufacturer would you wanna make parts for it?...nope. I'd be making honda and subaru parts. It's that whole supply and demand thing.

DOHC to quote a wise king "PISHAAAAA ****** please" That would have to be the biggest waste you could possible do on the Lancer; for the cost of DOHC conversion you could Turbo, Nitrous and install a system in that thing. Save your money.

I don't think there's a translation for what he said. None of it makes sense. My car has the RMR intake and an R1 Exhaust, and it was dyno'ed at 134hp at the wheels as of 3/5/02. There is no way a Lancer with intake exhaust and whatever else he said could dyno at 109hp. Now I have NGK spark plugs and Magnecore plug wires so I have no idea what it will test at although I have noticed increased torque off the line. DOHC wouldn't cost me $2500 like a turbo if I installed it myself, plus turbo and the like would be more efficient on a Dual Cam engine. There is no limit to the amount of money I will spend on this car to reach it's peak potential, I just lack the right upgrades to get me there right now. I will be patient.

Sorry man 154 was way off, 134 was the right number...Long night last night.

Still a stock Lancer might go 109 atw but with intake, exhaust, etc. it would have to push right at about what mine is running. As for the plug wires, I did get a minimal increase after install, especially in first gear up to 3500rpm where I lacked power before.

154hp at the wheels...I'll have to see the dyno sheets on that one. It is highly unlikely that you are pushing close to the same power as a V-6 eclipse (154hp at the wheels translates to 180hp at the crank). Realistically you could not take a stock 2.0L 4G94 and expect 154hp at the wheels by simply swapping intake and exhaust. 154hp at the wheels on your 2700lb car would mean that (if you have a 5spd) you could easily pull low 15 second 1/4 mile times and pretty much smoke an integra gsr, new beetle turbo S (180hp model), any V-6 mustang/camaro/firebird, the 2001 and previous Nissan Maxima, the Sentra SE-R spec V, the new V-6 Tiburon...etc, etc. Can you easily just smoke these cars? You can add plugs and wires but you will NOT gain any power whatsoever PERIOD UNLESS your stock plugs and wires are old and worn.

120hp at the crank is the manufacturer's rated power. The 103-105hp at the wheels sounds good and actually would mean that the engine is closer to 125hp at the crank. It FEELS stronger than that due to the camshaft tuning, ports in the head, intake manifold etc....all designed to develop a decent amount of low-end torque to have a quicker feeling car.

Now for DOHC heads your only hope is the following:
Locate a 4G92 1.6L DOHC from outside the US, 4G93 1.8L DOHC from 96 or 97 (all 98 and newer are GDI which you CANNOT USE), 4G92 1.6L DOHC MIVEC...this would be an awesome choice here, 4G93T 1.8L DOHC turbo (very hard to find).

Now before you start to ask:
NO, the compression will not go up too much. The mitsu line of engines use piston shape/design to alter compression ratios and nearly all the heads have the same combustion chamber size/shape on the 4G9X family. I don't know about your 4G94 head though since I have yet to crack one open or see the pistons or pictures, etc.
Yes, you will need a CUSTOM timing belt. Unless you can find a 4G94 DOHC that IS NOT GDI in Japan (good luck, since they are making all DOHC engines GDI). All other belts are too short since the 4G94 has a taller deck height.

Any questions?

Dude in a Mirage... gotta say I think you're wrong. More spark = more low end torque, more power. Get a hot wire kit and that increases the amount of flow allowed from the ignition to the spark plug, more high performance spark plug has more spark and better flow. You'd get better combustion and thereby be more efficient, and we all know efficiency is the name of the game as far as getting the most power from your stock engine. I've read STKR's other posts, and I don't have much faith in what he says, but, on that count, I believe he's right.

As for drunk guy, I can't believe he's on this forum. The Lancer is rated at 120, however, if you know anything about cars, it's that it OBVIOUSLY doesn't have the power at the wheels that it has at the flywheel.

Also, I've read things (not sure on the ACCURACY of this simply because of the way it sounds) published by MitsuMo saying that the Lancer was tuned to be the quickest Mitsu in America ever made other than (obviously) the 3000GT and GS-T/GS-X models of Eclipse. In other words, the quickest naturally aspirated engine.

Stock is 103 at the wheels and about 118 at the crank. As for upgrades on N.A. figure 10-20 at the crank for exhaust, intake and wires/plugs or removing cat. Mine with all that and T.B. never on the dyno but Rob at RRM datalogged it 1.2 seconds faster 0 - 60. I feel like I got enough bang for my buck. RRM turbo next!!! Then I'll be your !
