Should I buy an exhaust muffler/tip or full exhaust?

I'm pretty much new to working on cars or buying parts for them, so I need a suggestion on which exhaust I should get for my car. I read a few guides and they didn't say much about buying just the muffler part, so I figured I'd ask this just in case anyone else was wondering as well.

Right now I'm not really wanting to spend a fortune on an exhaust system, so I was thinking about getting just the muffler piece off of eBay.

This is a few examples of one of the exhausts I was looking at.

There are many others listed on eBay as well.

I also noticed that there were sellers selling catback exhausts like this.

Does it really matter which one of those I go with? I would like to buy just the muffler/tip piece so I can put money into other areas of the car since I'm on a limited budget at the moment.

its always easiest to go with the full bolt on. i like the looks of that n1. if your just gonna get a weld on cofee can goto you local muffler shop and just have them do it all. it will cost close to the same if you go with full bolt on or with the weld on... you might save money upfront with the weld on but after the labor of the welding/ installation you wouldve been better off getting the bolt on and putting it on your self.

I would suggest you start by reading the FAQ in my sig as it explains various aspects of modding the car. After that, do some reading in the lancer section to see what other people have done. In general, if you only care about sound, save yourself some money and get go with the muffler.

My local exhaust guy is going to charge me $15 to weld on an exhaust or around $75 to install a full exhaust.

The only thing I really care about is the look of it and I don't want it to sound like crap. Its just driving me crazy looking at the back of my car and seeing a space around the bumper for a big exhaust, and just having a tiny pipe down there.

Also, I'm not for sure if it matters, but I have an auto transmission.

I read the faq and as far as I can tell it just talks about the full systems. I did a search and found some people talking about the eBay exhaust, but not just the part you can weld onto your current exhaust.

The local shops here run 250-300. Full piping all the way through of your choice and muffler of your choice from their shop. Mine was $250. Installed in an hour. 2.5" piping all the way with a Wicked Flow muffler. Basically the same as a MagnaFlow flow through muffler. Purrs like a kitten except when I open it up.

^yeah go with a full custom set up like that, or get a cheap catback. as far as the install goes for the catback, if you can use a wrench and can put the car up on jack stands or ramps you can easily do it your self. i used to be in the same boat as you about 2 years ago. didnt know anything about the car or cars in general really and now just from doin alot of reading mostly on here im installing my own turbo kit.

good luck with what ever you decide to do and for future modding you can find just about everything on here about our cars

On the Eclipse I used to own, all I had was a muffler. I wanted to do things right this time around with the Lancer and decided to do a full Magnaflow cat-back exhaust. I'm happy with the sound and performance it brings.
