Disconnecting A/C
Disconnecting A/C
Im looking for some cheap hp gains and I have heard that if you disconnect the a/c that you can free up alot of h/p. So I was wondering if anyone has any info on this or has done this themselves. Also if you have any other sigestions on cheap mods please let me know.
There is always a boost with the A/C turned off, but there is no need to completely disconnect it. All you have to do is turn the knob to anywhere but the Max A/C position, and make sure the A/C light is not on, so if it is, simply push the button. The compressor will shut off, and the A/C will no longer suck the power out of the engine. There is NO advantage to completely disconnecting it.
Ive heard actually disconnecting the a/c is just like getting lighter pulleys because your freeing your engine from spinning the a/c pully. As far as I know when you get the aem or unorthodox pully kit and belts they bypas the a/s
That much is true, but you got to consider the gains and loses. I really depends on how much power you gain, and where you live. I love in the Las Vegas Desert, so that's not even an option for me, but if there are serious gains, and you live in cool dry enviroment, or can stand living w/o an A/C, then I say go for it, and dyno it, and see what you get... Sounds like too much work for too little results to me though.. think of the work and to void your warranty over something that has no real background off success... but then again... that's just my opinion...
Yeah Im not sure if it will give me a much of a gain.Altough I heard if you get an unorthodox pully kit that you can get up to a 25% hp gain.
I don't know how much heavier your car "feels" compared to a mirage coupe but I have the P/S bypassed and I still run my A/C (live in the El Paso Desert which is even hotter than Vegas by about 2-4 degrees during the summer on any given day). My car is light enough that even with really stick Yokohama AVS tires I have no problems steering. It actually feels much better on the track, highway etc.
If you have a setup with (looking at the timing belt standing on the passenger side of the car and looking at the engine) the crank pulley in the center, the alternator on the left side on a single belt of its own, the A/C on the right side at the bottom, the tensioner pulley right above the A/C and the P/S right above the tensioner then go to http://pub29.ezboard.com/bmirageperformance and look in the storage section or the Unseen Performance section for my topic entitled "5G owner don't want P/S but must keep A/C"...that will give you instructions from there.
