Injen Intake installed....rough idling

I just installed the Injen intake and all went well except it idles around 500-800 rpms and rough....the CE light isnt on....one other thing and this may be the problem, when I was removing the MAF sensor from the stock airbox I damaged the honeycomb foil a little bit...so stupid me decides to take it all out for better airflow....would that cause the problem? running to lean? Why doesnt the CE light come on then? I would appreciate any opinions!

I'm probably wrong, but I'd guess your ECU is adjusting to the change in airflow. try resetting if nothing else works.

Resetting helped

I reset the computer and it idled fine for about 5 min then started to sputter...maybe it is the ECU adjusting..I hope taking out that honeycomb foil didnt lean it out to much....

Aw man, don't not take out the foil. It's there to straighten out airflow, so the MAS can count the amount of air properly.

Otherwise, all the air is swirling, and the ecu can't compensate properly.

Replacement foil

I only pulled out the foil cause I smashed it pretty good getting off the last bolt from the airbox...the foil came out easily..I wonder if I can replace it or do I have to replace the whole MAF? Any Ideas?

Is the foil fixable or beyond repair? If not, you can either buy one MAF in a salvage yard from any +99 mirage w/ the 1.8L . . . both have the same model #. I'm guessing the lancer has a restrictor plate on it like mine, unlike the 97 MAF.

You can experiement using the 4g64 MAF from a 3g eclipse (4 cyl). I have done it briefly, but my car ran very lean until the 40 mile mark with a CE light. I need a S-AFC to tune it properly, but I have none.

MAF should cost about 40 bucks.

Bahamut..thx for info Unfortunately the foil is toast
I will check with dealer to see if I need the whole MAF....Besides that blunder the Injen Intake sounds great and I notice smoother and slightly increased power especially in the 3000-5000 rpm range..

maf sensor

if you know anyone at a dealer just have it replaced under warranty or put the original equipment on and take it in for the rough idle and when they find the maf messed up it'll get replaced free.

I don't know about the dealer. They are going to ask "what happened to the foil on the MAF". I don't know of any rationalization for an excuse that would sound plausible.

Check the salvage yard . . . if you can't get it under warranty (expect an arm and a leg).

I think this is a case where you're better off paying for a shop to fix it or, better yet, fixing it yourself. Don't bring it to the dealer. It's too hard to play dumb on this one. Either try the MAF swap or replace the mesh (if that's possible...I haven't taken mine apart yet so I have only a photo or two's idea of what it looks like.)

You shouldn't do it. It helps to straighten the airflow to the MAS. Otherwise, rough idle or stall at a redlight.

I replaced the MAF with one from a 2000 Mirage...same exact part number..It runs perfect again. If you are installing a new intake or taking off MAF for whatever reason be careful not to damage the honeycomb foil when removing from airbox....I learned the hard way...
