Ok so today, going to and coming from work I was trying this. I was shifting at 2k and what i was getting was about 22.5 mpg(all city). Note that work is like 2-4 miles away. I'm going to drive like normal tomorrow and see what the difference is. I still think 2k is pretty low to shift, but not that bad. Well see.

Wow I've actually tried that once before. But it didn't work at all for me. The engine is too weak to keep at 2k RPM.

I agree 2k is low. I do it at 3k which i find to be very resonable. And I have seen as much as 40 mpg's on my car on as little as a 5 mile drive.

In a manual transmission car the fuel injectors are turned off during decel.

It is called decel fuel cut, look it up. Or better yet, look for yourself with a datalogger. IDC will go to ZERO during this time.
Yep -- the reason I mentioned it is that the hidden menu in the MMCS actually shows ZERO fuel consumption when coasting to a stop in gear, but shows idle consumption when in neutral. The MMCS will show your instant consumption in uL/msec (microliters per 1/100 second). Its pretty fun to watch . Also, my 1992 Nissan 240SX even had decel fuel cut, as mentioned in its service manual. I can only assume nearly every modern car has it Heck, the prius uses the decel energy to generate electricity.

Someone gotta explain to me how comes the lancer consumes that much fuel, when I tryed to get more mileage on my 340hp everyday setup volvo, I tryed to accelerate slower, go 100km/h on highway, don't push it and I was getting maybe 500 km with one tank instead of 450 when I get some fun, accelerate a bit fast and roll 120km/h on highway. (Let's say I wasn't impressed...).
But the lancer get me the same kind of mileage I had before with the volvo, even when I don't try to push it's small ponies.

I mean, 1995 340hp 3250lbs with spirited driving = Vs 2008 152hp 3000lbs normal driving.. maybe I missed something .. or I really drive bad lol..
Because for now that's the thing that disappoint me the most with my car :S

Which option is it in the hidden menu? I couldn't find anything in the first hidden menu on this, and then i tried the second hidden menu and i couldn't find it in there either. Do you remember what the button name is?

I mostly do city driving and average about 21MPG ever since i got my car. Mind you I speed everywhere i go. so Im not the best for driving efficiently. A couple days ago I started following some peoples suggestions on driving better to save gas and Now im getting a lot higher MPG on my trips so far. Last night I drove to the pub and back and averages 32MPG. Today going to the grocery store got 28 MPG.

One thing i started doing is shifting a lot quicker. Usually i would utilize the 4000+ power band since shifting below 3000 rpm just seems way to laggy. But i noticed that if im driving the speed limit it doesnt really matter how laggy or not it is.. im not racing to get up to speed anymore. As soon as im up to the speed limit 35-40 mph (60 km/h) I stick it in 5th gear and just lock on the cruise control. Cruising seems to help a lot because i cant trust my heavy foot to keep the speed limit. One thing i notice is that when going down hills on cruise it will initiate some engine breaking to keep the speed locked whereas it would probably be more efficient to just coast in neutral down hills and gain a little more speed.

Im usually getting a little over 300 miles per tank. So it will be nice to see if i can stretch this tank a little more.

I don't recall exactly, but should be something like: Hold SET+NAVI to get first hidden menu. Then hold MENU to get the 2nd hidden menu. Look for "CAN Communication check", then under that should be a screen for "Detailed CAN communication". In that, change to page 2 of the screen and it should be there. Hope that helps.

forgive me for not getting a pic of it, but the other day when I left work mine showed like 240 miles left with a little above 3/4 tank. (I have a led foot sometimes , specially with the SRI I like to make noise and toy with ppl that think they have their civic hooked up) I actually put all this to use. I shifted just before 3K rpm, and actually did the speedlimit. 65mph highway and 55-45 city. When I got home it said I had 390 miles left and I was just below 3/4 of a tank. I travel 35 miles one way to work Needless to say I was impressed, LOL

I tried what brian360 said, when you are braking to a stop, the fuel consumption does register zero when in gear. Unlike when you switch it to neutral.

It's nice to watch the fuel consumption go to zero for a change lol. But you have to be careful with that because even in gear once it slows down enough it will start consuming fuel again. It's a great gauge for downshifting though, whenever you see that zero go up, u just down shift and its pretty much back to zero. Now if only hid the accelerometers somewhere in this thing...

One thing you have to take into account though: When you're in gear it slows you down... so the zero consumption will often get eaten when you have to accelerate back to speed, whereas in neutral you slow down a lot slower, meaning you don't have to accelerate as often ... So depending whether you are stopping or just coasting, you might not want to be so quick to leave it in gear.
