Lower temp thermostat?

I was reading through the service manual and it states that 2 factors that affect the engine timing is the temp of the air going into the engine and the coolant temp, it says by having a colder coolant temp you get more advanced timing. Has anyone tried this or are there cons to doing this.

your engine is designed to run optimally at full engine temp Ie) 170-180 degrees. Running cooler will just waste gas and end up putting premature wear on your engine. I wouldn't recommend doing this to get some more advanced timing. Get a ECU flash or other mods.
