engine miss/service engine light

so my car had been misfiring a little bit but only on the take off and under the 2500k rpm range...my dad knows alot about cars and told me to buy plugs and new plug wires...but i have to wait till i get paid to get that...i get paid in a couple days but last night i was driving home from visiting one of my friends at college and my service engine light came on and hasnt turned off...if i get new plugs and wires will this go away? or could this be somthing more serious than just a simple replacing the plugs and wires repair..? Thanks for the help...i did read the sticky on the engine missing so no one please tell me to go read that....im more wondering about if its more serious because of the light coming on...thanks again

If the plugs are causing the misfire and it's the misfire code then yes it should turn off.

Check the code like Amby mentioned. You can go to a local auto part store and have them check the code for you. They should check it for free.

Unplugging the battery for a minute isn't going to work. You need to unplug it for at least 15 mins or so. It may vary. Try a total of 30 mins to be sure. Also you can have the scan tool turn it off for you too, but i don't think you want to drive all the way to Auto zone again.

This thread is entirely worthless without knowing the actual code which was set. That and the vehicle mileage would help immensely.
