Exclamation Dent + Oil Pan = Bad Lubrication ???

i have an 02 oz lancer

it looks like the lowest part of the oil pan is dented (or is that just how it looks?)

i tried searching the forum but only learned that there is an upper and lower oil pan (maybe didn't search good enough)

so i guess the dent is on the lower pan

my question is...

Does having a dent in the lower pan effect the oil pickup?

Will the dent hinder lubrication?

i ask this because with nissan's sr20 engine the oil pickup is really close to the bottom of the oil pan and a dent in the pan can close the clearance gap between the pan and the bottom of the oil pickup, restricting oil flow.

is the pickup in the lancer engine like an upside down soup bowl like the sr20? or is it a half sphere metal screen?

any help would be awesome, thanks

The oil pickup sits pretty close to the bottom of the lower oil pan. I would change or repair your lower oil pan right away as the dent WILL cause lubrication issues. Depending on how big the dent is it may have also dented the pickup. Remove the ten M10 bolts that hold the lower oil pan in place and inspect the oil pickup. If the pickup is good and the pan is not too bad after removal, take a hammer and pound the dent back out.

after getting the car in the air and cleaning the pan up i can see that the deflection is less than 1/8th of an inch (or so it seems)

if the head was starving for oil would i hear valve noise?

where can i read about the 4G94??? (is that my engine???)

i wanna learn about the head design and what not

also thanks for the advice

Now wait, is this actually a dent? Cause the LOP is not flat on the bottom. Can you provide pics? And yes you would definitely hear valve noise from oil starvation. Ugh bad times.

sorry i took so long to get back

ive come to the conclusion that the pan isnt dented as bad as i thought

its a factory bend and the pan is a lil scratched up

the dent is minimal and the lifters arent unusually noisy so im just gonna leave it be

thanks for helping

I dont like the location of the oil pan seems like if you drop a curb it will dent. I would rather have a crossmember in the way.
