You really should get a K&N recharge kit. You need the oil included with it to keep water out of the engine.
Other than that, you spray on the cleaner, wash from the INSIDE out with water and then let dry. Spray on oil, let set for 30 min and your done. The air drying takes several hours though, so be prepared.

Yeah the cleaning kit is only $10, and the K&N kit has specific instructions, easy to follow. Just be prepared to let it dry for a few hours before driving. It also said most filters only need cleaning every 50k miles, but I'm probably going to do mine as often as you'd expect to change a disposable filter.

Whatever you do, do not over oil the K&N filter, it will definitely decrease the airflow and decrease the performance. On K&N filters I have used in the past and present, I usually oil it a little bit less than the instructed amount.....it is definitely a night and day difference on my bike. I would clean it on a as needed basis, and I believe 50k would be crazy. Just keep an eye on it, they definitely pick up more crap than a regular filter.
The instructions say a little build up actually helps block the dust, although as mentioned above that probably affects airflow as well. But mine looked pretty dirty after about 13-15k, so I'll do it at least that often.

check the manufactures web page for correction cleaning proceedures. if you got a K&N it is easy, you can get a kit any where. Spray on the cleaner, let sit for a bit, hose off and let it dry, then reinstall. I have never ran anything but K&N's so that is the bet advice i can give you.
