Stock Air Box Question

I have the RMR intake on order, but I was wondering...with the stock air box is there anything you can do to get better breathing out of it and make it louder?

Why in the world would you want the stock air box to be louder? They're designed for ease of maintence, cost effectiveness, reliability and mass production. You could get a K&N drop-in panel filter (which I have) to replace the god awful stock panel filter (stupid cotton gauze). There was a slight increase in engine noise and gas mileage but what do you expect from a 4 cyl dumping out 120 at crank? Don't worry about trying to tweak that stock air box. Wouldn't be worth it especially if you've already ordered the RMR cone setup.

Personally I would keep the stock airbox handy even after you recieve the intake for warrenty purposes...
If you need some work on the engine just slap that good ole' box back in there.

An I'm also with "P" on this one.. Can't see any reason to try an make your airbox any louder...
The K&N drop in filter as "P" meantioned will give you better airflow but as far as loudness wait for the intake itself.

Well, I had heard that there is a resonator? on it, and some other things to constrict noise, and I wanted to take them off. I ordered the intake just today, so it will be a while until I receive it.

Be careful removing the stock air box though. Me and about half the people here destroyed it or damaged it all to hell while trying to remove it. I guess I wouldn't make a very good obstitrician, huh?

Resonator? Where? The stock equipment is the ram funnel above the radiator, the bottleneck pipe, the main filter housing, the filter, the MAS, then the tube leading to the throttle body. I don't see room for a resonator. Perhaps you heard resonator/diffuser mentioned in the thread about the intake manifold? If so, the theory is the bulge in the intake manifold on the left side (looking at the engine) could be a resonator, designed to disrupt airflow (quiter and probably affecting emissions as well).

if you're in the mode to ruin the stock airbox you can always drill holes in it . . . . this would make it louder . . . i definitely would nto reccommend this, but i knew this kid who had a mid 90's protege and he drilled holes in his stock airbox . . . it sounded like he had an intake on it becasue it growled so mch, but i wouldnt consider doing this unless u want to trash the stock airbox . . . just wait for you RMR and you'll be fine . . .

It takes about 20-30 min to install try using vise grips and a second person to remove the mass airflow sensor! Very easy to do that way!

The actual hole where the air comes in is like 2 inches wide on the stock box! It amazing how small it is! The RMR intake does wonders for the way it sounds!

I would suggest keeping the box intact just incase. Although my Mitsu dealer said that adding the RMR Intake would not effect the warranty at all since the install it there also.

Yeah you remove the scoop you might get a tadbit more sound but think about the loss...
Scoop = Sucking of cold air from outside straight through the grille, through the scoop, to the airbox.
No Scoop = IMO you'd probally suck more hot air an drop performance for a little sound.
