short ram intake with hood vent

right now i have an aem cai and i live in pa where the weather sucks and im getting a ken style kit where there will be nothing blocking my filter. i was wondering if i were to get a rrm or injen sri with my cf style evo hood, would i notice a loss in performance. i like the idea of my vent accually serving some purpose so people dont just think its for looks even tho i pretty much is. do you think it would be beneficial or completely pointless. i know this has probably been posted a hundred times before but i couldnt find anything. so if anyone has this setup or something close to this could you please give me some input and also which sri would be better injen , rrm , rmr or what im kinda clueless haha. anyone that could help me out i would appreciate it thanks.... Brock

See, now that's just it. This HAS been discussed over and over again, but never answered...mainly because people are too afraid of water ingestion to use a short-ram with a hood vent.

If the vent allows water to hit the filter directly, and it isn't olied properly, you will have a nice drink, meaning hydrolock, meaning $$$ for repairs, and a big fat void on your warranty.

I personally would love a nice way to channel this frozen midwestern air right to my RRM intake, but I enjoy having my car run too much to try it.

haha thats why i was thinking possibly the injen intake because of the heatsheild. i know that water drips down in that vent now like crazy. i can see the water spots on my aem. im just not sure if i should sell it or keep it. i want to get a short ram but i dont see a point in lost almost 75 bucks just to get it. .... im still confused thanks for the reply though

uh get the sri, and turn the heatshield upside down so it directs water away..but that defeats the purpose lol

My opinion, keep the CAI. You can put mesh in the body kit to keep objects from hitting the filter, and being that it feeds from the front, you won't get much water on the filter. Further more, the water would have an even harder time penetrating the filter and travelling all the way up that piping. With an SRI and a hole in the hood, the water is that much closer to your intake manifold.

Run a search on hydrolock and you'll find that you are probably not going to get any damage with a CAI unless you drive through a 2' deep flood. And if you're still worried about it, I believe AEM makes a bypass valve, but I really don't think it's necessary.

i would keep the aem cai if i were you. first of all, if you want a sri, then just take off the second pipe and move the filter up. i would take urbanknight's advice and simply put mesh in front of the filter. just my 2 cents.

i'm in the same situation. i have the evo7 front end conversion, and i was trying to decide between a cold air and short ram. if you notice though, the air vent on the hood DOES NOT sit right on top of the stock intake, or were an aftermarket intake system would sit. it actually sits on top, right in front of the drivers side suspension tower. so technically, there should be no worry of massive water being sucked up or water even hitting the filter for that matter. me personally, i decided to go with the rmr intake. it comes with heat shield and uses the stock front scoop located by the radiator. with the stock scoop, and the air vent on the hood, i figure it should get cold air. you can search if you want to read more info on it. hope that helps.

in terms of performance, you'll notice a bit of loss of peppiness in the low rpms when you get the sri, but you'll have a nicer top end. i've had both the rmr and aem cai.

Well, the question has been solved. I'm poorer because of it, but I just gained some HP...

I am from the same area man, I know how the weather is here. The best suggestion I can think of ( what I was going to do when I get the EVO 7 hood ) fabricate a shield. Your going to have water dripping in through thte vent regardless unless you completely block it off. The best thing you can do is try to make it so that the filter is not soaking up direct water. Moist air is alright, but direct water will cause you alot of problems. Step up, get some sheat metal or abs plastic and fabricate something. Get in there, be one with the car, get your hands dirty. Then you will be able to solve your problem and be able to say you have a custom, one of a kind shield that you fabricated yourself. Chicks dig it, haha

i got the front end from import trenz..... . i actually JUST got back from picking the rmr intake up from my local dealer. i opened the box and wow . the heat sheild is VERY well made, and the filter is big! very impressed. great quality. the actual picutres don't do it justice at all. i actually havent put it on yet, but plan too right after i eat. anyways yeah i got it from my local dealer for $140 plus tax. it came out to about $146 total. only thing was that it took about 2 weeks to get here. guy at the dealership told me rmr is a little slow on shipping, but thats ok for me! it was worth the wait. check on rmr's website, they have a list of dealers that carry their products.
