0W-30 Instead of 0W-20?
0W-30 Instead of 0W-20?
Can't seem to find any 0w-20, can i run 0w-30 instead? And could someone explain the difference in simple terms. I'm familiar with the "weight" debate that many people have with the 5w vs 0w but haven't been able to find much about the difference between 20/30.

you could run it, might be a little noisier but really 0w20 is quite easy to find. Check out walmart, they have a huge selection and the lowest prices. I buy a gallon of quakerstate horsepower (aka ultimate durability or some ****) for $20. Other good ones are rotella t by shell.
I was thinking so, but then i found 2 quarts of 5w-20 synth on my shelf so went with that.

In a nutshell, 0w20 flow better at extreme cold temperatures than 5w or 10w weights. The number before the "w" represents the cold weight or cold flow rating. The number after the "w" represents the hot or operating weight. Both numbers are important for their own reseasons.
On the cold side, the lower the number the better, this means it will flow instantly regardless of how cold the engine is. This is important, because for the first few seconds of start up there is metal on metal for the first few seconds of startup for your motor. If you can minimize this, it will extend the life of your motor significantly.
On the hot side, every motor has a recommend weight number you should run. Oil has multiple purposes, lubrication yes but the oil weight / flow has a lot to do with removing heat from the motor which is very important. Moving to a 0w30 weight really isnt harmful, but it may slightly reduce your fuel economy. That would be the only negative I would say.
Now not all oils are the same, synthetic or not. Different manufacturers construct their oils in different ways. Mobil 1 for instance has made a formulation change and has engineered their 0w20 and 0w30 to be equal and some may be bold to say superior to their 5w20 or 5w30 counterparts. It has been engineered to flow better in the cold, and out perform in extreme heat conditions vs. the more common 5w20 and 5w30 oils.
That said, many of the oil companies in the industry rejig their formulations to make a better product. And the trend is heading towards 0w oils. While myself and my car club are sponsored by mobil 1, for the past 2 years, I have used mobil 1 all my life and to be honest. It has never let me down. What shocks people even more, I use the extend performance stuff on my other cars and change my oil every 17,000 miles. And they do just fine. On my lancer I use the 0w20 oil
