most likely because the metal stiffens when it is colder and therefore doesnt like to move or flex as much.

I've thought about that and the rubber being stiff when its cold. RRM told us to check the sway bar end links, but I haven't gotten a chance to see if they're bad or not.

probably strut mount bushings, or even control arm bushings, when they get cold they get harder, so they squeak, grind etc.
