Timing belt WAYYYYYY over due!

I just picked up an 03 Lancer OZ with 168K miles. The timing belt has never been replaced and I am going to attempt to change it. I have been reading up on it and it doesnt seem to be to difficult of a job. I am getting this kit http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...630&cc=1417238 My question is, is that everything i need to complete the job? And is there any tips/tricks that might help me out?

Thanks!

You'll also need the alternator and power steering/ac belt at least. I used this kit when I did mine a few months ago:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003BQ...sr=8-4&pi=SL75

I also replaced my spark plugs at the same time because I wanted to make use of the valve cover and plug boot gaskets. I didn't mess with the cam gaskets that the kit came with though.

The whole thing took me about 6-7 hours with breaks for lunch and to look up timing indexes and to swear at stubborn bolts.

Thanks! Now the only thing im worried about it the timing. What are the steps to keep the timing right?

Yea - you're already way in there, so might as well change that out so you dont have to redo it once it goes bad.

It's a fairly straight forward job - just remember to check/adjust/place your Timing Marks!

What do you mean by adjusting the timing marks? I know there are marks for the crank and cam gear. Dont you just keep them lined up when you put the belt on?

Yep ..i meant check and adjust if need be. I know when I did mine a timing mark was off by 1 and luckily i caught it before i put things back together and it was fine. I know some guys who have done theirs and not checked or lined them back up probably and were running off-time after - so they had to get back in there and fix it

Is there a way to lock the cam gear in place before removing the belt? or is that not necessary?

No, there is a small dot on the crank pulley that should be at the top iirc. And there is a notch I the cam gear that lines up with a small arrow that's on the head just below the valve cover gasket to the left if you are looking at the cam gear from the passenger side. I'll edit this post when I find the thread on here that has pictures.

Edit: heres the thread with pictures to show where to line things up.

Yes, another balance shaft question

This is the single most confusing thing about changing the timing belt for me. My 2004 OZ, stock engine, does it have as balance shaft or not, and so does it need the belt also?

I'm planning on changing the timing belt/water pump/etc, and knowing in advance is good. I'll also get the serpentine and alternator belts, and put off diagnosing the A/C compressor for a week - it's bypassed, and probably bad, the pulley seems loose and I'm expecting it, along with parts like the dryer etc. Feh.

For the record, 2004 OZ, 212k, exc body and interior, replacing the obvious stuff on the motor. Bone stock is fine for me, for now.

Lol oops. I didn't realize I put the video up there. Topics here have been kinda blah lately and I've gotten numb to them since a lot have been recurring.

Crank Pulley --134 Ft Ibs
Cam gear --65 Ft Ibs

Very important!! Timing belt tensioner --17 Ft Ibs These can snap if too tight and the tensioner can slip if too loose.
