Axleback to catback differences
OK, a question came to mind when I was looking over my long-term plans. How different are axleback exhausts (such as RRMs) and catbacks (any of them)? Basically, if I was poor/cheap and just got RRM's axleback, how much performance would I be losing compared to saving up for a catback?
To put it easier: for those who have had the RRM axleback and then gotten a catback, how much difference was there?

Well, I asked TURBOit, since he had both the RRM and now Buschur's catback, so I think I know which way I'm going to go. Now I just gotta get the $. Thanks for the input.
Going catback helps a lot more on the top end than an axleback will. But it also kills your bottom end until you get enough intake mods (forced induction included) to match/exceed the speed of exhaust flowing out.

Right now I'm leaning towards axleback, actually. I have no intention of going FI and I really miss my low-end. Plus, it's closer to my price range. Worst case, it may be a stop-gap until I get the header, throttle body, etc.
if you look at RRM's price for an axle back its like what ...270 i think.
Now if i would of gotten a custom cat-back with a muffler ofmy choice it would be been like 325 i think, but since i went bigger piping it bumped it up to 400$ because of the labor and ****.
SO i would much rather spend the extra 50$ or whatever and get a catback that will axle sound like you put some money onto your exhaust.
I spent 220$ on just an axle back at first and it sounded stock - literally no differnce or hardly any, went to the catback with the 2.25" piping and it was a little more UMPH and the nicer sound.

I agree that a custom catback is easily the most cost-efficient way to go. Most custom jobs won't cost you more than $300 with a muffler unless you go with a spendier canister.
I am with Blacksheep, I saw a dyno from a non-turbo Lancer with a catback, and the hp is still climbing at 6000 rpm. That means he gave up torque to gain horsepower he will never see. So, I am either going to get an axleback or a custom catback with only 2" piping.
im goin F/I this summer hopefully...should i go 2.5" cat-back or 2.25" i mean...will it make a big diff?
F/I im just talkin 5-6 psi nothing more than that really....my bro could custom my exhaust free..so should i have a shop just weld my muffler on and just have my bro do it when i visit him this summer? im lost here, lol

IILANCERII02 i don't agree about your sound comment, i got a magnaflow ($160) and had it welded in place of the old muffler (like $40) and it sounds great, how ever i'm saving up for the resonator and having it welded into place to get an even deeper sound, i really enjoy it, also as for going for bigger piping, no, not worth the loss on a N/A vehicle that prob. never be F/I, even if i do it wont cost that much to have the pipe dia. changed
