87 or 88 octane?

Alright, I know that this topic has been covered thoroughly regarding why it is not worth it to put "premium (91)" fuel in the tank because it is not worth it, etc. My query is this. Here in Utah, we have 85, 87, 88, 89, and 91 octane fuel. As we know, our engines were designed to operate at 87 ideally and the only petrol station that seems to have 87 is Maverik. I have usually ended up putting 88 in the tank. Sure, it is only 1 octane difference, but is there a noticeable difference? I am sure that I am quibbling over nothing. However if it does make a difference, I sure want to know about it.

To be clear, I am simply trying to ensure that my engine is running as efficiently as possible with all variables possible. What do we think?

87 octane is just fine, octane is the gasolines ability to resist detonation, if a car calls for 87, putting 88, 89 , 91 or even 100 octane will make no difference, thats why everyone will tell you its a waste of money. Buy 87 octane, just make sure you use good gasoline, shell mobile chevron ets..

It's not really an issue of money, it's more of a matter of convenience. I basically have to go out of my way to find 87. :/

Agreed, if you can't find 87 without going out of your way. Just get 88, it's basically the same thing, you won't get any performance gains, but it isn't going to hurt your car or anything.

The octane rating also deals with speed of combustion. But as previously stated your fine with probably any of the above. Unless your boosted of course.
