i don't know about the lancers, but i know the evo has a serpentine belt. this is one belt that turns the water pump, alternator, ac pump, and power steering pump. the only thing to do is remove the ac pump itself and get a shorter belt or get and underdrive pulley kit

Take it off... should assist you. The car actually turns easier once moving it is when you slow down you'll be working those arms out. Some tracks won't let you do this as there is a big liability issue in it. Since our water pump is turned by the timing belt though you won't be hurting anything. For the record though i know there are three belts on the lancer... one drives the AC and power steering... the other the alternator... the other the timing belt. Make sure the one you're removing is for the AC/power steering though. Good luck and let us know how the 5-10 extra ponies feel.

Be careful on the launch... without power steering it may be hard to keep the car from torquing to one side. Just a thought!

mishap turned into an experiment

2 nights ago I snapped the same serpentine belt you guys are talking about.

Even drove it around hard for a bit once I determined that nothing major was wrong. First thing I realized was that I had much better acceleration.

Of course, I haven't even begun modifying my car (just got it 2 months ago) but it's a serious pain parallel parking without power steering so it's going into the dealership today for a new belt today. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the extra horses I got.

There's a tensioner for that belt right up front above the AC compressor. If your shop can't get it off, they shouldn't be touching cars.

if you snapped off your serpentine belt, your car would die shortly there after. You're water pump wont' be turning so you could or probably will overheat. Second your alternator isnt' turnign so you arent' charging the battery. Your car will kill the battery in no time

Correct. You'd need a shorter belt that still powers the alternator and water pump.

ldstang, your signature is ridiculously long. Could you please edit it to make it shorter?

Preciate it. If you wanna keep the mods just take out the returns and put in commas.

I took out the whole air conditioner and power steering pump out of my old 88 civic hb and it made a huge difference in power. Now that I have my lancer I have never even thought about doing the same thing. Having to roll with your windows down in 100+ weather instead of ac sucked ***. The power steering isnt really a problem until you try to do small turns in tight areas, like 3 point turns.
