Question on breather filters install

I want to intall one and remove the vacuum hose to the intake.

I haven't had the chance to see a breather filter up close and would like to first know what type of connection is has to attach to the engine.
My 2004 Lancer has a nipple type of connection on the side for the vacuum hose to be simply pressed onto. Are all Lancers this way and are the breather filters for Lancers made with a simple rubber hose connection to press on the nipple? Or, do these fileters have a threaded connection where I have to change the connection on my engine?

I just want to be sure what I need before I order one.

I had a generic one I had on for a while, the breather connector was a little wide, so I cut a centimetre off the vaccumn hose and shimmed it in to the breather. But yeah, it goes right onto the male connector, and the hose clamp should tighten up nice and tight.

What will you do with the hole in the air intake hose? Just fill it?

That would be the correct thing to do, correct? Or am I wrong? I was thinking of putting some type of rubber cap from a hardware store that was the right size to seal it nice and tight, but can be easily removed.

BTW, anyone know right off hand what the size of the breather connection is and where I can buy/order a good one for cheap?

Plug the hole in the intake, and use a screw clamp or something on the filter.

Just FYI this is automatic grounds for failure if you have inspections where you are.

why is that?...because of the breather ot because you are pluging the intake?

This is mine, it's from Toucan a.k.a. Ractive.

You just put it over the little piece sticking out form the valve cover, then clamp it down with like a screw clamp. (Tighten the screw and the clamp closes.)

And I just put a bolt in the whole where the intake is. I didn;t seal it or anything. I had it for a while and it doesn't come out.

It's supposed to be routed back into the intake. No idea why.

Makes no sense to me either. Maybe if it was routed back in BEFORE the filter, but it's not.

Its routed from the valve cover back to the intake for emission reasons. It takes the crankcase blowby vapors and burns them. Those oily vapors will now be under your hood and may cause your engine compartment to get dirty faster, even with the filter on there.

The up side to doing the filter is your intake runners and throttle body should stay clean.

I am going to build an inline vapor catch can to install in my car, same effect without tampering with the emission control systems.

The "soot" coming from the valves by law, needs to be sent into the engine to be burnt, where it is no longer a pollutant. The air intake suckes that crap into the engine and burns it with the fuel. Putting a breather on vents that crap to the atmosphere.

Technically, wouldn't it filter it and release air to the atmosphere?

My breather has been dripping a little oil. Originally I had it on the original hose and zip tied it over to the side because my Vented VIS would let water on it. As it was hanging down, oil was dripping from it. I am going to try it directly onto the side and see if the oil drip is any less...

I think the stuff it vents to atmosphere is still chemical vapours, the breather seems to do a good job filtering out particles and oil, but that's about it. It's a $120 ticket up here in Toronto if you're caught with it. I know guys that don't want to spring for catchcans that run it using the vac hose down to an area that's not visible, and still have the breather attached at the end.

When I had it on before (I'm back to routed back to intake now), I had the intake hole plugged with a bolt with teflon tape on it.

Just some options I guess. The legal, cleanest way would be to get a catchcan.

i just got 2 little breathers....one for the intake, one for the valve cover...

i dunno if its 'safe' to put it on the intake...for all i know it allows 'unaccounted' air into the engine which would make me run a little lean...which is ok cuz than i get better gas mileage.. lol but it runs just fine. xcept the breather filters are blue, so is the inside painted interior...but my big SRI filter is RED..lol
