Question HELP!! Do I have an Exhaust leak?

I installed the RRM header on my 2002 OZ-Rally 5-spd.

I am curious about the noise I am hearing, and if it's normal after installing a header.

I hear a repeated "click" sound..... The sound basically sounds like the beat of my engine. I guess I "kinda" heard it before with the stock part on, but it seems much louder now, and even a little different. I guess the best way I can describe the sound as "....click-click-click-click..." and they speed up as I accelerate. I am 99.9% sure what I am hearing is the engine/cyclinders..... but, is that supposed to happen? Does anyone else have this sound?

I torqued the nuts down to the correct torque specifications, and I put both gaskets back in their correct positions (as far as I can tell).

Is there any way I can get a definitive answer if I have an exhaust leak? Is there any way to test/prove this? If I took it to an exhaust specialist or something (like Meineke), do they have equipment to find/detect exhaust leaks? Thanks for any help.

I haven't heard any noises coming from my header (RPW, not RRM) in the 2+ years that I've had it installed. You can try popping the hood, pulling the throttle cable and using your hand to feel if you have anything leaking. Or maybe you'll see whatever's loose that may be causing that clicking noise. I'm not too sure but I wouldn't associate a clicking noise with an exhaust leak. Good luck!

Thank you petey pab & ghostrider

Anyone else have any ideas??

I tried pulling the throttle cable while I was under the hood, and feeling around for a leak. The only problem is it's hard to tell because my radiator fans kit on and they're blowing air around the engine bay.

Any idea/info are awesome... keep em' coming.... Thanks in advance, this site rocks.

Does anyone know of any equipment/tests that will definitively tell you if you have an exhaust leak or not? Meaning, is there any type of equipment on the market that a shop can hook up to your car to tell you where the leak is if you have one?

Try using a small hose. One end at the flanges and one at the ear. Works wonderfully!

the easiest way to find out if you have an exhaust leak is to just check your whole exhaust. if you see carbon build-up around anything, thats most likely where the leak is.

Sounds like the throw out bearing for your clutch. You can always go to your local Mitsubishi dealer and get them to hear and examine it.

it sounds normal, I thought I had an exhaust leak myself, I took it to CarX to get a free leak check. and everything was fine. Honestly it doesnt sound like anything is wrong but incase you want peice of mind just take it to any muffler place like middas or carX etc. and they should give you a check of the entire exhaust system for free.

Yeah I am just really worried because I thought it would sound different. It just sounds.... odd. Like a ticking or clicking in beat with my engine..... I guess that's what a header on a 4cyl sounds like??? I am confused.

if it's coming from the head/valve cover, it's the hydraulic lifters. it's a known issue. not to worry about. if you rev to maybe 2-3k and it stops for a while, it should be the lifters.

No, it's _definitely_ related to this header. The only thing I changed was the header, and ever since then I've had that weird exhaust note sound. Like, it kinda sounds like a lawn mower engine..... I dunno, maybe that's just how 4cyl sounds w/ header. The best description is like a "puttering" along, or a ticking that's in beat with my engine.

It feels like the torque and acceleration is about the same as stock. Is that normal or should I be noticing a HUGE difference??

The tone of the exhaust definitely changes when you install a header but I've never heard it described as a clicking sound. The exhaust note gets higher pitched and louder, but this is coming from the back of the car, not under the hood.

an exhaust leak could cause a clicking noise. my gf had a crack in her manifold once and made a clicking noise. more louder at startup since it was kinda small. not saying you have crack anywhere, but just probably an exhaust leak. did you bolt the header on in the correct bolt order?
