Actually, a friend of mine has a Miata. He was online somewhere and there is a company(I believe it is it Texas) that actually puts either a 302 or a 350 in the cars. Its a lot of money, but people have done it. They just have to re-do just about everything to get it to work right, but they made it possible. They just have to custom make everything but it is possible. Not trying to be an a$$, I just thought it was an interesting.

That's actually a common engine swap, because all of the member of Cobra Owners Club of America like to have car that performs like a Cobra but isn't as expensive to repair if they crash it at the open track sessions. And since the clubd requires that all cars entered be powered by a Ford engine, they put a 302 and sometimes a 351 in a Miata to make a "cheap Cobra". My dad's in the club (owns a Shelby Mustang) and there are like 3-5 of these "Monster Miatas" at the Willow Springs events every time.

I think the easiest swap would be from an Evo7, since they are on the same chassis. The stumbling block is mating it to a trans, since it's meant for the Evo's AWD setup. I dunno.

You can swap a jet engine into a lancer if you spend enough money. Just about anything can be done with enough money and the right people. Even if it means custom parts, custom mounts, custom ecu's, custom body panels, etc, it can be done. It's all a matter of money.

So even if it can be done, most people choose not to because the ammount of money required to accomplish a task like that isn't worth it.
