Best particular brand of gasoline, if any?
Actually gas at most stations are all the same. After they refine the oil into gas they ship it to pumping stations in Louisiana and other ports. From there it gets pumped all over the country in underground pipes. All gas companies use the same infrastructure. Even though it takes 3 days for gas to get from, say Louisiana to NY, as soon as the tanker ship pumps it in, his company's gas trucks can immediately tap the other end to the amount that was put in. The differences between Exxon and BP are the additives they add when filling the truck and there has never been an independent study that shows one company's additive is better than another's. I'm not in the oil business, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.
Actually I saw that on Modern Marvels on the History Channel.
Oops, I guess this was already mentioned.

that being said, I still won't use gas from the cheaper places around here because they skimp on the detergents. I think that's what we're paying for. The detergents are mandated as part of clean air legislation. Shell, for example, claims that their 92 has additional additives to clean your engine (VPower). Why only 92? Because soccer moms in minivans and dudes with stock lancers think 92 is cool, when all it's really doing is building carbon deposits. So, Shell adds extra detergent to help prevent the buildup from this inefficient combution cycle. I've written pages and pages just on EvoM about why higher than 87 in a stock Lancer engine is just a wast of money.
DJ hit it right on the head- it's all preference (knowing that all fuels have to meet a minimum requirement). I don't use Exxon ot Texaco simply because those were my dad's brand of choice. I like Shell, 76, and Chevron (in that order) primarily because I see thier fuels being used in auto racing (and I like the smiling cars
). Sure, I know the F1 guys are buring like 200 octane (I'm exaggerating, keep your pants on) but it makes me feel better to think that similar technology is going into my tank.

All of this is interesting info for me at least, so far my car seems to run best on Shell gasoline, I just filled it today after getting 360 miles on one tank. Then again it is new and just over 1000 miles on it.
