420a swap?

I had that engine in my Talon I did an Eclipse conversion on. I really didn't like that engine. I mean, it was ok, but the timing belts were terrible on those things. Even when they were replaced the engine was so sensitive and most of my buddies cars had the timing belt still mess up and ruin the engine. Personally, mine never did that, but that transmission in the automatic (and even the manual) was very weak.
As for being on the wrong side, it looks like the setup is the same as the lancer to me.. here is a pic of my old car.

I had a SOHC neon.. Orientation of the engine is correct, however the intake manifold is towards the front, and the exhaust is to the rear on the 420a, the DOHC 420a is apparently very similar, which makes sense, since the 420a is a derivative design the mitsubishi engine.
its a decent motor, I was running in the 13's with mild modifications normally aspirated and an automatic tranny..
However I would look closer at the 4G63 (Evo engine) swap, using the third gen eclipse 4G94 transmission this would likely result in a much easier swap.
Don't get me wrong, none of these swaps is "bolt in" you have wiring, and ECU mods to take into account, but the last thing I mentioned shares many more common components and wiring that would make it a little easier for you.

The 5g mirages had 6a12 and 6a13 = 2.0 and 2.5 liter v6 . . . small displacement blocks.
Thanks for the picture on the 420a block . . . I always can't remember the t-belt orientation.
IMO, I'm think the 420a will have the same/similar mount locations as the DSM counterparts w/ a g63T. That's why the motor is backward facing toward the firewall. Also, it's very rare for NT eclipses swapping for DSM motors. Don't know the ease, just not cost effiecient amongst the school of thought for 2g DSM'ers.
If you're going to look at the 420a . . . good look for the rare 2g Neon R/T w/ DOHC.
Other than that: I know amongst the 1 and 2g 420a . . . they have a terrible cyl head design and will leak coolant eventually like the starion w/ another motor design.
^--yea I had problems with my 420a leaking at the cyl head. Also a weird oil leak from the right side of the engine block where there was a sensor. It was a poor design. The trans went out on my car. So I replaced the trans and sold it. Then not even 50 miles on the BRAND NEW trans, the thing went out again. It had to so with some slip differential pin that is really weak in that trans breaking and cracking the transmission casing causing all the fluid to leak out.
The easiest thing to do with those 1g 2g eclipse/talons though was just swap the motor/harness/ecu/trans with the 4g63t motor in the GST model eclipse.

costs:
engine: 6-800
tranny should bolt...
ecu is said to work but i would get one just in case--2-300
custom axels -i dont know costs on this
modify the exhaust piping....1-200
