You really have to do a lot of work yourself first. Give the sponsorer something he/she WANTS to sponsor. Then be in the right place at the right time, kiss ***, and hopefully you're irish!

A lot of companies who are LOOKING for people to sponsor advertise it a bit. You can find out details from their websites or by calling and asking if they're looking. You've basically gotta be a salesman for yourself. Be sure to read the details of their contract though. Many have some...interesting...little quirks for those who want to be sponsored.

My favorite blips on sponsorships is the advertising part. I know for the most part a) you can't have any competing parts manufacturer listed on your car b) anything given to you by your sponsor is subject to being taken back by said sponsor and c) the sponsors do expect to see some return on investment (many car shows/expos and awards). Remember, no such thing as a free lunch.

Just call around and ask shops and manufacturers if they are looking for any cars to sponsor.. I had a kid call me up the other day looking to become sponsored.

There's also contingency (I think that's the word) plans, too. Like if you win or place in a race on a certain brand motorcycle, the manufacturer may have a plan in place that pays you based on your place and the visibility of the race (sanctioned? regional? national?).

They'll also usually give you some amount of money if your vehicle shows up in a magazine with pictures and/or mentions of certain parts. You just have to prove it to them.

Obviously this isn't straight-out sponsorship, but it's also something to be aware of.

My boss just got sponsored as a bass fisherman on a local tour, and it requires him to have a magnetic sign for the company on his truck, a company shirt, and he has to make a few all-day public appearances at the stores, too. He got in because his brother works at the place that is sponsoring him. So the point is like the ones above: "you don't get something for nothing and you have to know someone or do some good digging to get in."
