Lancer Oz Rally Question...

Hey guys i'm new here, as you can see in the sig i have a 99 GT so this question does not pertain to me. I have a friend who's dad has an evo and he is absolutely obsessed with it, which im sure you all can understand. His dad is going to be buying him a car shortly and he wants it to be insurance friendly. one of the choices is a Lancer OZ Rally. He is pretty excited about this car, though i dont know why since it only has 120hp . my question or questions are what are the options to get that thing fast. i know turbo kits are available from RRM and other companies. Will a stage one turbo kit be sufficient or will he have to move to a stage two? i have read that the lancer oz can only run 5 psi on stock internals. if this is the case, what all will he have to replace in the internals. also what kind of suspension mods are helpful for traction (i guess it helps on fwd? i dunno since mine is rwd)? also, how much is he looking to spend in upgrades to get the car running mid to low 13's, or high 12's? is this possible?
should he go through with this or just pick out a new car like a Mustang? haha

thanks,
jake

fast and lancer do not mix

but yeah, the RRM turbo kit is one of the best ways to go, proven on the track too.

suspension upgrades, the best way to go is the Tein SuperStreet coilovers. That's an expensive option though. Or lowering springs. One of the first things to get is a heavier duty sway bar, and then at least upper front and rear strut bars

some of the guys here are hitting around the 13's (stock evo time) with the stage 2 kit if I'm not mistaken. The stage 2 kit will probably run anywhere from $5000-6000.

The internals that would definately need to be changed would be the rods and pistons so that they can handle the higher boost (probably another $1000).

As for traction, urethane motor mounts will eliminate wheel hop and a limited slip differential will definately help get good traction. All in all if he's really looking to go ***** the wall and make this car as sick as it can be, he's probably gonna spend just about as much for aftermarket parts as the car will initially cost him. (parts, labor, etc...)

tell him to get a Ralliart and modify that, he'd be closer to his goal then.

well i will let him know but i dont think money will be an issue because he assures us he will have $10,000 in one year to mod his car with a minimum wage paying job

Tell him to get a Ralliart instead, if he wants to mod it.

low 13's?

don't get a lancer unless it's a ralliart or evo.

Keep it on-topic, kids.

You can get well above 5 psi - you heard wrong.

He'll be pretty happy with Stage one. It's a great mod for the price. Stage 2 is just that much better.

If you really want traction, go LSD and motor mounts as timdog said.

5psi on stock internals for an automatic.... automatic tranny cannot handle the power put out by boosting more than 7 pounds. Marc (that posted above) has a manual and is boosting 9-10psi on stock internals with no trouble. Anything above 11 i recommend building the engine (forged pistons, forged camshaft, stronger valves, etc.... etc.....).

I'm sorry if this couldn't be an option...but couldn't he save that $10k and put it for an ownership of an EVO instead. Just trying to out-weigh the pros and cons on this topic. Good luck though.

Has to be insurance friendly.... so the evo is already out of the picture.
