Valve replacement
Valve replacement
So i start the turbo install 2 weeks ago (from this saturday). We also decided to do the timing belt at the same time. Well we got everything installed after a ton of work and customing a few things. Today we put all the extras in like radiator and other stuff; and then we are ready to turn it over (w/o packs) to prime the oil feed line and check the timing. Well ......*key turns*....*TURNING SOUND*--- BLING. Valves are bent. No compression. Death! So now i am going to take it to a shop and have them replace the valves and so forth. Just wondering if any of you know about how much this is going to cost? And also the length of this job? Also the cost of the materials, like valves for one. Anyway this is just a minor set back. Still waiting to feel some boost! It will happen. Just not this week.......or maybe not even next week. Hopefully this month...

Ok well we matched all the lines up (or so i thought). Im not the mechanic here, my uncle is. But anyway we lined them up and after we got everything back together he wanted to turn it over one time by hand to see if there was any contact. Well he did and said no there wasnt; he even asked me if i could feel air in the spark plug holes, and i could. But when we he got done, i dont think he lined up the crank shaft to that "T" mark on the plastic. he said if it was off now it was to late anyhow. Well i went to turn the key and the first few times it didnt sound bad but then it started to make this really loud CLICK. He said that didnt sound good so he hooked the pressure thing up to the first spark plug hole and told me to turn it over again and then he said there was a problem. He didnt tell me exactly what besides the valves were bent and he didnt know which ones. So i am assuming there was no compression? Well anyway i hope to find some prices tomorrow from the shops close to here. I mean the turbo is on and installed great but now the valves are bent ='( o well. So much for this week of spoolin'!
I have a Mirage head sitting in my garage too. Aside from the stuck bolt it's fine. I'm going to drill it out and get it P&P'd when I have money again.
I also have a damaged Lancer head that I'm going to cannibalize for the Mirage head's betterment.

I could drill it out if I wanted to spend the 5min, but I'm a lazy bastige. I'm not looking to sell mine anyway.
I think the cam profile is different though. Maybe one of the Mirage guys can confirm/deny this one for me.

wait wait wait
The timing mark doesn't get lined up with the "T" (for top dead center) on the timing gauge anyway. Stock is 5 before +- 3 so if you went 8 before it's gonna look way off of the "T"
Does he for sure know what the compression is supposed to be? (170-210 on stock internals). In order for a compression test to be carried out properly, doesn't the engine have to be up to temp (or at least have had a few good starts to get some oil and fluids moving around?) How long did you let the engine turn over before he told you to stop?
And I can tell you what valves, if any, bent based on his test: the vavles that control the exhaust and intake on that cylinder.
Did you have the vavle cover off at all? Did you mess with the lifters or the spacers on the intake-side rocker arms? I can tell you from experience that if one of the arm spacers isn't sitting perfectly on the arm, the noise is enough to make you want to cry (you'll think you seriously FUBAR'd your engine, but all you have to do is turn it so the flat side is up). The lifter noise is kinda bad, too, but it'll go away in a few minutes.
Ok, enough outta me for now. I'm just trying to say you from having to unnecessarily replace a head or set of valves.

Depends how much got bent. Valve broke in my RSX at 6000RPM (timing chain, yes chain, was fine. Plus it's a non-interference engine. Must have been a defect in the valve). Valve took out the piston and rest of the head over that cylinder. I tried starting it a few times too (could get it running by stomping the gas, sounded bad, let it stall and got it towed). New head, new piston, honed cylinder. Haven't got the write up yet, probably 3-4000 dollars for all that (warranty
Having said that, your head is likely fine since it happened at a few RPM, not 6000. Valve replacement, probably piston replacement. I will guess 1000.

Well it was towed to a shop and he is going to line up the timing again and tell me what valves are bad. When i turned it over there were no plugs in and about the second turn i heard a clank. It sounded bad; the guy at the shop told me he was going to check the marks and then let me know what parts are bad. he said in worst case senario (all the valves being bent) it would run around 800ish for machine shop and all. I wasnt able to diagnose it past what i was told by my uncle, so i couldnt tell you what exactly was bad. Gonna call the shop tomorrow and see what they found out. Hopefully not bad at all.

Guess it depends upon costs.
