2003 evo 8 possessed after mods!
my best friend has an evo 8 and we just installed hks 272 cams, walbro 255 pump, boost controller, and custom tuned ecu by a very reputable tuner( dynoflash ). we installed the cams properly because i've done it before and know what to do in this installation. we lined the cams at tdc on compression and the crank up at tdc. the fuel pump turned on and was spitting fuel when we tested it. we pulled the plugs out and all coil packs are working and all brand new plugs are firing. Yes, the CAS is installed properly and the trigger is in the correct location for #1 TDC. we have NO IDEA what the problem is. it's weird, we have spark, fuel, and air, but no start! it will turn over but never actually turn on and run. we also checked all fuses and every single fuse is in tact. any help here?
another response from me on another board...
at first i thought it was the walbro and low and behold it was the walbro because he didn't push the plug connector in far enough to snap into connection. my guess is that it's the new ecu, although the guy who flashed his ecu is VERY reputable in the evo world(dynoflash). we pulled all the plugs out and plugged them into their connections and grounded against the valve cover, tried to turn it over and clearly saw that we were getting spark. We also unplugged the high pressure hose on the fuel pump and hooked another hose to the high pressure outlet on the pump and turned the ignition to "ON" and gas poured into the cup.
When we did the cam timing we followed the evomoto.com instructions to a T by putting the crank at TDC and checking that the gears were at TDC before removing the valve cover. when we put the cams in we made sure that the dowel pins were at 12 o'clock and the #1 cyl cam lobes were pointing directly out to the sides (TDC, valves shut). After replacing the CAS correctly(yes, we checked the orientation against evomoto's orientation) we put the valve cover back on and then turned the crank over by hand a few times and all marks line up to their proper positions...TDC. The only thing left to try is throwing a stock evo 8 ecu in and trying that, but we don't have any access to one. What would you guys recommend? Could the ecu cause the car not to turn on like that assuming EVERYTHING ELSE is correct?

Did the car run before with those mods and then you got a custom tune? I'm confused.
Has the car been started with the walbro yet? I know mine took a few turns over before it started getting gas if i remember correctly. I would think a faulty pump would be more common than the ecu being bad.

Is the CEL on? After you turn the key to on, it should go out after a few seconds. If it stays on get a logger and pull the code. Also do a compression test (the numbers will be low but should be consistent from cylinder to cylinder), you can't do squat with air, fuel, and spark if you're not compressing it...
i would recheck the cam angle sensor just to be sure. you have to pull the cam cover end plate off is all you have to do. it just sounds like it wants to fire 180 degress from normal. try that and see what you get. otherwise im suspecting the ecu flash may not be correct for the mods. good luck.
There are two plugs on top of the motor where the sparks are under the cover, they are grey. You may have them plugged into the wrong partner. Try unplugging them and reversing them.

Remember Evo pump does not run at key on, only under crank and run.
You say fuel poured out. Where did you disconnect and test at?
I should do more then pour, there should be good pressure behind it.
Sounds like the classic pump seal not reinstalled properly and it's leaking the pressure back to the tank.

Did the car run with the flashed ECU? Or did you just get the ECU flashed? If you just got the ECU and the car is turning and isn't starting. It sounds like an immobilizer problem. Maybe got the wrong ECU. Other than that I have no idea.

sorry for the delayed response...
we actually installed everything all at once. i know this may not be the brightest thing to do with new mods, but hell, we did it anyway. the cams are perfect and the CAS is perfect too, we can eliminate that. the pump works fine and shoots fuel out very well. we checked to make sure fuel was getting up to the fuel rail and it was. all fuses are working and the when putting the ecu in we unplugged the neg. terminal on the battery, installed the ecu, then waited a few minutes and plugged the battery back up and then waited a few more minutes until we tried to fire her up. we had the seal on the fuel pump on solid as ever because we had all bolts tightened up to spec before the car even thought about being started. We even changed the plugs to brand new plugs, pulled the coil packs out and watched each plug arc in sequence as we cranked over the ignition. To my knowledge, which is "decent" when it comes to cars, leads me to believe that possibly this new dynoflash ecu is faulty or just something was corrupted somewhere, somehow. Air + Fuel + Spark + good compression = a running car and we have all of the above. So we just shipped the ecu back today and are praying that that's the problem. I have no idea what else it could be, but everything is just pointing in the ECU direction. help me out guys...thanks and we'll get back to ya'll on this!

I had the same problem before on one of my older FI cars. I think you need to prime the pump. Most pumps will shut off after a second or two from cranking so as not to overheat the unit. turn the car on and off (not cranking) for 2 seconds at least 20 times, then try cranking. Doing so will push fuel down the lines and then the car should start.
If everything is installed correctly like you said it is, I can almost guarantee it's the ECU. You probably won't get it back until Tues or Wed. Depends on what time you sent it and what time Al sends it back. Good luck, let us know how it turns out. This could end up one of those lessons learned things.
