Air Filter

I need to replace the air filter in my 04 ES. Are there any air filters that are better performing for my car? Sorry if there is already a topic on this...

I guess what I am saying is this. I am looking at auto zone and they have a filter for $14 and a filter for somewhere around $70... the 70 dollar one being a K&N filter. Now what is the difference and is it worth it to spend more?

K&N filter tends to be higher flowing, thus increasing horsepower (woah there, probably only about 1 horsepower to be exact). Plus it is washable, so you won't need to replace it ever, just clean it. I think $70 is a little high, though. Pretty sure I've seen the K&N for around $50.

add $50 and get K&N Typhoon Short Ram Intake for a Lancer. Around 8hp right there and better sound.

not to be a jerk or question your sincerety, but I doubt a Typhoon (or any intake for the Lancer, for that matter) will add 8 hp just by adding it. Top brand intakes dyno to show 3-5% gains at best, and that's usually when accompanied with other mods. That translates to about 3-5 whp tops, which honestly is a great improvement on the Lancer.

be sure you only get a cold air intake if you drive a manual. Automatics won't fit without some customizing.

Anybody have an idea how the new Fram Airhogs perform. Aren't they supposed to be relavtively close to K&N (price & quality)?

I put an Airhog in the Ford Aerostar I own and I got a little bit better throttle response and fuel mileage ( maybe 1 mpg better), about the same that I've noticed on my K&N for my Ford Focus. I will probably get a K&N for the Lancer too. I don't think Fram makes an Airhog for Lancer, but don't quote me on that.

$70 is steep, I haven't paid over $50 for any of the ones I've owned. Check on-line at knfilters.com, there are links to on-line resellers of K&N.

Or go to your local autoparts store, or a Pep-Boys, Advanced, etc. although with the Lancer being somewhat more rare then a Cavalier, they might not carry it.
