Update on my controll arm snapping

my dealership FINALLY called me today and said it would 1,500 to fix everything and that they wont cover it under warranty....then she dropped the bomb on me that the other side is starting to go bad ... she said id want to replace that so this dont happen again... should i just call mitsubishi direct? because im sure my cars controll arms are defective....who has ever snapped thiers?? nobody... so how can i snap one and the other one be going bad?

.......and if i pay for it id want something beefier...i took a look at an evo's controll arm and it looks a hell of alot stronger than mine.... you guys think it would fit??

Sorry to hear that they won't be paying for it. Difinately look for beefier alternatives. Hopefully everything goes well; keep us updated.

doubt it.. but go find somenoe with an evo. and yes call mitsu directly. also call a lawyer... there are some that won't get paid unless they win... and the law will also get one for you for free. file a lawsuit... that costs like 50 bucks rather than 1500. call the local newspaper... tlel them that you almost died due to a manufacturer's defect and the company won't cover it. here i'll help you... www.cnn.com www.fox.com www.cbs.com seriously man, take this **** biiiiig get it in ur local paper. screw these guys over.

Sue Mitsubishi. Tell the dealership you're doing it too.. that'll get their attention.

call mitsu corporate and have a district rep take a look. It's not under warranty, IIRC you bought it used, but they might be able to say "yes, this is very abnormal and we'll pay for XX%" or something like that. Then discuss lawyers. Do not authorize any work, parts, labor, etc until you've had it thoroughly examined and have maybe called a lawyer. In fact, call them now and talk to the service manager and tell him that you don't want that car touched and you don't want even a single bolt ordered until you've had a second opinion.

Cast iron control arms should never have snapped like that, they are normally good for 10 years and even then its just the ball joints that come off, not like the arm snapping. Cast iron is one of the best material for a control arm, they absorb shock very well, its definetly a casting flaw !.

Not that it's much help, but if you're mechanically inclined (even a little bit), you should DIY the work. You should be able to get the control arms for like $250 and do them both in an hour.

But since none of this should happen, nail their asses to the wall!

actually it should be under warranty. i had my rear control arm screw up on me and i went ot the dealership and they covered it. told me it was a recall. i've gotten a few recalls for my car already. the fan, the control arm, and now i'm getting something else done. either way, call dealerships.. mine covered it.

Not that it's germaine to the topic at hand, but I don't believe the control arms are cast iron. Stamped mild steel (1004 carbon or A36 "mild") is more like it. Cast iron is brittle and in small cross sections is prone to cracking and breaking (faster than honni's arms even). The only places I see cast iron anymore is in the decking of larger tools (bandsaws, lathes, drill presses, etc), in engine blocks and in decorative ironwork pieces that are easier to cast than forge or carve. Because of the very high carbon content (over 2.2%, which makes the piece brittle, especially when shocked thermally) cast will not weld electrically, and last time I checked my control arms had mig or tig welds on them.

not that it's a big deal, but running in there screaming about casting flaws is going to make you look like an artard and will turn the topic away from "what're you gonna do to fix this" to an argument about materials

keep us posted.
