Hey all its like he said , its the throw out bearing ... Mine has done it since about 8 months after i bought in in Dec 2002 . its more of an annoyance then anything as im sure we all agree. It makes no sense that its not covered , i mean i understand the wear and tear thing but a little catastrophic dont ya think ? Anyways if you guys cant get the dealer to do it under warranty dont worry bout anything else breaking. Just wait till you need a clutch and have them replace the bearing then.

The throwout bearing only affects/concerns the manual trannys - not autos.

Ok, to answer everyones questions....

1. it's for manuals ONLY
2. it's a throw out bearing that breaks rather easly on 02-03 lancers
3. i was told that it was covered under the powertrain warranty granted your warranty is still valid.

if you have any problems with that dealership, then you need to contact another dealership...

now a brief description of what it sounds like....

when the throw-out bearing breaks it starts to make a *clacking* noise..when you engage the clutch in idle it goes away, when you disengage in idle it comes back...now turn your ac on and it should get louder...

also, be warned....i've been told by one dealership that if they suspect foul play i.e. racing, drag racing..they'll void the warranty and charge you 800 bucks to have it repaired..so make sure you find a dealership that's no so harsh on that ****...i say call around and see what's up...then go from there...if you have any other questions feel free to hit me up...

i too have a "clacking" noise in my car when i first turn it on and when i turn on my a/c it gets even louder. also my car is an auto, you sure it's not also for auto's? X_X the noise really does get on my nerves but what can i say? no money = no fix > . < i can live with the noise but it's good to know more info on it ^_^

If someone could record the sound and post, that would definately be helpful. I've got some clinking noise a little, but I mainly hear it when I'm deaccelarating.

let your engine idle..if you hear a clack clack clack with the ac on then you'll know instantly.

^^ Thanks, I'll try it and see, but sounds like mine is still ok. Just out of curiousity, what causes this to break?

it's actually a design flaw... alot of dealerships have tried to shove it off as a "racing or abuse factor" when i got my car tho i didn't do squat with it because i just needed a car and really didn't care to do anything with it, mine broke at like 3k miles...some dealers tried to say it was due to abuse...but i don't think that's the case.
