For clarification: When you are coasting down a hill in a modern, electronically controlled engine, the computer is sending just enough fuel to the injectors to keep the engine running, so you aren't burning much (if any) more fuel then having the car neutral.

Even if you are running downhill at 4000 rpm, unless you have your foot on the gas, the engine is getting just enough fuel to stay running.

This is how it was explained to me, I don't know how true it is. But I've never had a change in fuel mileage from using more engine braking. And I get pretty close to EPA ratings with my cars ( IF I keep my foot out of it!)

ok i did some research... its true that level 10 doesnt list the lancer.. so i dug deeper... the 02-03 lancer uses the "F4A42" type auto tranny. other mitsu's that use the same auto tranny are:

'02 2.4L Galant (4cyl)

'01 1.8L Mirage (4cyl)

so since these 3 cars use this F4A42 auto tranny, i think we can buy a mirage or galant sport tronic application from www.levelten.com

i got my info from:
http://market.autopartsfair.com/sear...1&part_id=2497 just use the search

and also Guru Del did some previous research

yeah its 500$ i'm really considering this cuz i want a manual... but i dont wannt trade in my auto lancer lol.. 2 much work put into it.. so its either a tranny swap... which no one has done or sport tronic w/ torque converter.... also which no one has done but which ever one is the most painless n cost effective

think about this though, even though i want you to do it, cuz i might later, would it be as much fun with only four gears.
People complain on this forum about the Manuals only having 5 gears. We got screwed with four. just something to think about

go with the sport tronic and TC cause the TC is like another $700 for the basic one, a good one is i think over $1000. but a tranny swap you gotta pay for an expensive (used might be cheap) manual tranny and i think the ECU and a clutch pedal and installation and crap. sport tronic and TC is prolly cheaper

you do have a very valid point... this is a down side.... BUT controll over my gears out weighs the 5 gear thing... hopefully the tourqe converter makes up for the 4th gear handicap

Bingo. You don't really want to switch to neutral like a manual because your auto trans doesn't use gears, it uses paper and steel discs in groups called clutch packs. Since they are shifted hydraulically, it could do more damage than good.

There's also a reason for this - the ratio of the gears in the transmission. The 4 speed autos with overdrive are meant for fuel economy, not for performance. This is why when you order something from, say, BMW or Mercedes you get at least a 5 speed auto and it's usually tiptronic or something. As far as having 5 speeds for manuals, they are because most Mitsus have close gear ratios, the Evo being a prime example. On a 6 speed, the sixth gear is usually a taller gear.
