Had a front plate in California. Moved to South Carolina which doesn't require one. But since I already had the plate mount which is drilled into the bumper, I didn't want to take it off or leave it blank so I bought a Japanese plate. Turns out the pre-drilled holes in the mount line up with the holes in a Japanese plate and the dealership had to drill new holes in the mount for an American plate.

Been pulled over twice for it here in IL, written a ticket one of those times. I still dont have one on there. I should keep it in my glove box but I just throw it in my trunk. Oh well
