My car falls apart
My car falls apart
Ok so today i was traveling on I 91 south ( i have an AT 02, and there were 4 kids in my car so it was running slow as it is). there was a turn in the highway that lasted about 3/4 of a mile that was pretty tight, and traffic and i were moving at about 70. All of a sudden as the turn ended, and my car started jittering like i had run out of gas. I had half a tank+ so i knew this wasnt the problem. well it kept jittering like i was out of gas, and my rpms kept going down and down even though i would open the throttle. eventually they dropped to 0 and my car stalled on the highway in the fast lane doing about 70, so i rolled into the brakedown lane and stopped in a safe spot.
I tried turning on the car but it just kept trying to start and start (all electrical systems worked fine, and i heard no clanks in my tranny so im assuming it is in ok condition) - it seems like there is no fuel getting into the engine. i had to pay 140$ to have my car towed home, and now its sitting in my driveway. everything seems fine cept it doesnt start
a few months back on this same turn ( i was on my way to NC) the same thing happened, but after slowing down a bit my fuel kicked back in and i was on my way. Was it the high G turn that caused something in my fuel system to go ape??? plus the extra 500 lbs in the back? What gets me mad is how unsafe of a condition i was in, and if its some kind of recal problem, im gona be MAD cause its pretty easy to die on the highway like that. (btw i checked my air filter, exhaust, anything stupid like that and its all fine) Any imput that could save me some $$ would be greatly appreciated rite now. THANK YOU fellow lancer owners

You might want to look into why the belt broke. My first car, a 1984 Honda, broke the timing belt twice within 16000 miles. Turns out I have a bad seal and oil was leaking on the belt, making it soft and gummy. Timing belts should normally last at least 50000 miles, but really depends on how the car is driven I suppose.
Another thing, isn't breaking a timing belt while driving a really bad thing? Like in terms of potential engine damage? Glad to hear you and your boys were okay though.

hmm I know old E30 guys used to have a problem with oil starvation with these type of turns. Basically, under constant G load for an extended period of time, the oil goes all to one side, causing the other to be starved. I'm not sure if that applies here, but it's something to think about.
As far as I have ever been told, timing belts should be replaced between 30k and 50k. Also, supposedly breaking one while driving isnt TOO big of a deal, as long as you dont continually try to start the car afterwards. That is the only thing i miss about my Nissan. Timing chains rock! Hope everything gets back up and running normally for you.

About 1000 miles ago i had my engine replaced due to hydrolocking ( town wide flooding so it was all covered luckyyy ) and on the invoice from the place where i got my engine it said to change the belt. I found all my paperwork and my mechanic clearly didnt replace the belt - he probably looked at it and thought it was fine. now the place where i got my engine, the local mitsu shop, pep boys, and my lawyer all place this at His fault, everyone agree? i paid him $700 to replace the engine, its not that hard to throw on a new belt for 40 bucks. Thing is hes on vaca for a few days, and im out a car and 300 in towing and diagnostic fee's. Any ideas???

guess what happened?
You're lucky our lancer's have SOHC. Breaking a timing belt is usually just a matter of throwing a new one on with SOHC. I used to have a 1g dsm and i got hit by a dude in the drivers side front quarter panel where the door meets the panel, nothing major, we were only going about 20mph (totally his fault btw). So a week goes by while i'm waiting for estimates from insurance and my belt snapped. Turns out where he hit me took a little chunk out of the timing belt cover and sure enough, i hit a bump on the street, the little piece of plastic gets caught up int he belt, snaps it. Bent all 16 valves and had to replace the head. I miss my 4g63 though. SOHC engines dont really do much damage with a snapped timing belt because the simultaneous opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves is all controlled by one rotating cam, so when you snap the belt everything still spins in unison. However with DOHC there are two separate cams and camshafts controlling intake and exhaust stroke so when the belt snaps they get out of sync and the intake valves smash into the piston head causing mucho damago. Not fun. Enjoy the lawsuit! just get him to buy you an evo and call it quits
Ok so this ordeal is finished. Now i have an 03 OZ motor with 9199 miles on it from some place near boston. FOR $200
Some rookie girl at a car place priced the engine wrong on car-parts.com, and i paid for it in credit card like asap, and the guy called me an hour later and told me it was 750. So i offered to have a court date with us and capitol 1 versus him and he passed. He made us pay 125 for shipping tho
I had that swapped out for 400 and its a done deal, everythings perfect, runs GREAT, plus i have a warranty with both the engine place and my mechanic for 1 year.
BTW we have interference motors like the hondas, so if your timing belt snaps off above low cruising speed there is a good chance one of your valves are going to be destroyed - get those belt checkups !!!
