Cool/Hot air blender question

My girlfriend just bought an 02 Lancer. Apparently when I was checking the car out for her I missed checking the knob that blends hot and cool air. Turns out that knob won't move correctly. I followed the cable down to the levers by the drivers gas pedal and that's where the problem is.

The cable moves just fine once its disconnected, however if I try and manually move the levers they're very difficult to move... I'm sure if I tried to force the knobs with the cable hooked up it would break something.

Is this a common problem? If so, how can I fix it?

Thanks,

Justin.

There's a fix available from the dealership, costs like 70$ CAD installed.

Well my guess is the kit costs 10$, but the install is 60$.

I didn't know there was a fix. I just thought it was a piece o' ****.

I'll have to look into that.

Thank you for the replies Everyone.

Unfortunatly there is no warrenty, the car is about 2 or 3 thousand miles outside of the warrenty period.

I will call them tomorrow and find out exactly what the issue is, wether there is a recall or not, and pickup the nessesary peices to replace. I will do the install myself and if there is any interest post a write up as well.

Same problem here but I turned too hard and broke it :\ I called my dealer and *****ed him and they agreed to repair the cable and the knob for free even if my warranty was out.

Like Walkingchos said, there should be a recall on it and any dealership "should" repair it for free.

Alright guys, I just got off the phone with my Mitsu dealer.... From what he tells me there is no recall on it. They want 800 dollars to pull the dash, discharge/recharge the AC, replace the parts, etc...

I told him that I thought that was ridiculous and that he should replace everything for me at no cost based on the fact he knew exactly what the problem was before I even went into detail and that i've heard of many others having the identical problem.

He phoned his rep and will get back to me...

in the meantime is there anyone who can provide any proof there was a recall? If I had some paperwork I could bring to him I'm sure it would change his mind. ( I am very skeptical of his service rep replacing this at no cost )

I don't think it's a recall, I think it's just a service announcement, meaning if you bring it in under warranty they'll fix it, otherwise you're SOL.

Mitsu (well at least around me) fixed it for free, but it was probably cause they smashed my windshield into pieces when trying to fix it
