$10,000 to spend!
right about the srt-4 i know thyre fast my buddy has one. but his insurance is in sane. hes a cop magnet and bought his used with miles [not sure how many] for over twenty. there are some obvious fringe benefits to modding a sleeper.. every where he goes in his srt4 some poser in a civic or a auto matic cavilier revs on him. cops follow him for no reason. i'm all about stealth ya know. po po's dont even look at me.
There are advantages and disadvantages to that. The obvious disadvantages are a lot of attention and high insurance. The obvious advantage is the insurance, if you get in an accident with a modified car and your insurance broker is not aware of it, you're **** out of luck. In the best case scenario they simply refuse your claim, in the worst case they refuse to insure you anymore. The sleeper look is also relative, you certainly won't look stock with 15000$ under the hood, the intercooler will be noticeable, the suspension will be noticeable and the exhaust will be noticeable. Sure people won't instantly go "oh look a lancer, those things are fast", but once they see what you have they'll go "oh look, there's a modified lancer, it's fast".
true, iguess were all screwed no matter what if you think about it. any one with common sense will notic the ic, exh, and lower just like ya said. either way ya go. your still stuck with a car payment. be it payin off the car or the credit cards or loan to mod it.
If I had that kind of money I would probably get someone to redo the entire suspension setup on my car (after the turbo of course). Yes everything replaced, prob tein coilovers and custom drop spindles so that I could drop the car a little more but still have the suspension travel? Thats prob more than 10 grand but oh well. Also have a complete aero package. With a wintunnel designed front bumper, and undercarrige. Something that knowone else has. Of course all this would be well over 10k but thats what I would do. It would be the most baddest, assted lancer ever!
Browse RRM and get as close to $10k as possible.
Definitely Stage 2 turbo kit and Tein SS coilovers. Rear sway bar, all the braces, intake and exhaust, and good tires.
Then a custom downpipe (with wastegate piped into the exhaust).
Then some Recaros.
That'd probably be $10k, so I'll stop now.

Ok since I haven't really inputed on this topic yet... First make a plan of what you wish to accomplish with your car. Never buy because of the hype but research everything. Source parts yourself and know what you are buying. Buy what you can used in the classifieds here. Find out what fits older model Mirages. And finally do as much of the work you can yourself.
That said this is what I have done so far: (what follows are estimates, I didn't keep any receipts)
Nex Coilovers: 600.00
Toyo Proxes 4: 220.00
RDD bars: 200.00 (I can't remember)
Intake Mani: 60.00 (Used... bored out with help from N1te and Jotun)
RRM SRI: 150.00 (don't buy this if you are going turbo eventually)
RRM Headers: 300.00 (used)
Kartboy Shifter bushings: 60.00
Magnaflow Catback Exhaust: (400.00 I think)
Safc II- 205.00 (Used and in the mail... thanks Aznflip)
My Plans:
First tune my car with Safc II and Wideband with the help of some friends. Custom Turbo setup, or used RRM Stage 2 when I have the money and I'm done with college. Better rims and tire setup. Solid motor mounts. . And to keep my car as reliable as possible while still trying to get around 230whp... but those are my long term goals. Right now I'm happy with what I got.
On a related note. To all you Lancer guys out there: Don't let what some tools say about how crappy our car is affect you. No matter how much others say how bad our cars are to tune we all know that the satisfaction from making our cars better comes from the journey not the destination. My car will always be a work in progress. And while I might own many different cars in the future I always plan on keeping this car.
It's my first tuner car. It represents friendships made and an education. I've been blessed to have found this site and all of you and your egerness to take something that is basic and turn it into something unique. It's you basic Lancer guys that really define what the original tuners did. Continue to do so. Shock the Evo guy with your ride. But more importantly follow your own path.
The measure of how great your car is lay not in how fast it accelerates, or how well it turns, or even how different it looks or sounds but in the measure of where it was and what you have made it. Hold true to that and no matter what the nay sayers have to say you still built it... and they just bought it and had someone else install it.
