This layout is not surprising.. The world engine (Mitsu/Chrysler 420a engine) was laid out the same way, as is the 2.4 engine used in the SRT4..
Since this is a shared platform, using "world components" I'm not surprised it was engineered this way..
Aside from a turbo application, the intake side would typically see more work than the exhaust side might over the years and therefore it makes sense to make that stuff more accessible.

i think they put the exhaust in the back for lower emissions the closer route to the ca means the faster it heats up. which in turn means low emissions.... kinda suck but this might be the case for the evo too
Well, at least there is no issue with the exhaust heating up the oil in the pan or clearance anymore.
I don't think it will much harder to work on. You probably won't have to screw around with the plastic under tray as much.

yeah and i hate EDM cars cause of all that plastic. i wanna see the damm engine and all the sexy little components and parts, not plastic!!!!!!>.................lol

someone told me days ago about subaru coming out with a 3.5 litre or so turbo ap car??? anyone know how true this is. i cant see it being a rally car since that would be way over the restrictions
The thinking behind this makes a lot of sense. You put the turbo and exhaust manifold by the firewall to keep the heat back there. You put the intake manifold and intake in the front so it stays cool. Better and consistent performance. This layout has worked well for the Honda K series engines. Plus, for a horizontally mounted engine, the weight is placed towards the back (all the exhaust stuff) and not hanging out in the front. Looks promising to me.
Personally I dont think the new engine layout is that big a deal anyways. Is it true they are going w/ GDI? How will that work for us tuners? No more SAFC's. No more cam timing adjustments? I mean what? and 1k HP 6 months after release? No disrespect but I doubt it
