Quick questions:

How many miles on your car?
and how much powersteering fluid do you have in there, is it full?
Is it hard to turn your car while parked or driving slow?
Does your car rev up a little while turning the wheel as you are parked?

Trust me, you dont want to mess up the power steering. I have spent over $1000.00 replacing my whole system (rack and went through 2 pumps) all because some douchebag put the wrong fluid in there.

I think its just your pump.

omg get that **** taken care of!!! that looks not good... well honestly thats just some surface rust nothing too bad sorry to trip you out for a second and you have an 02 with the many miles... its time to get sexy with your car and get into her insides. TIME TO REPLACE: timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump, ac/powersteering belt, alternator belt, and that should do it. its all easy to do just set aside a day and if ur scared then do it on the weekend go to mr-auto-parts.com for all but the tensioner get from autopartsgo.com

oh and if ur gonna do it all urself you'll need a impact gun to get the crank pully nut off (the twenty dollar one from kragen that you hook up to your battery will work you'll just need to sit there for like 5 mins, and since you'll have it off time to buy the RRM lightened crank pully!!!! woooooooo hoooooooooo

Almost sounds like an exhuast leak at the manifold/header flange. My dsm used to sound like that till I planed the edge.
