Uh, that's the dealer-added helipad they add in there...just pull it out.

Okay, how about you start it up and narrow down the area from where it's coming from. Noises are all too common, especially from an '02...

Left side when I pop the hood open... seems to be that belt that is spinning. (Srry I'm not technical with names, I'm big time newb when it comes to cars)

Loose/bad belt. Take it to a dealership or mechanic for tightening/replacement.

Thank you.. and .. - What is the purpose of the belt, and will it cause any damage, and will there be any difference in the car's performance/response when i replace it?

I don't know what belt it is. If my memory is correct, there are three different belts there. It could be harmless or it could destroy your motor. This is why you need to have it checked.

Could be the alternotor, could be the A/C, could be the one that turns the motor.

We don't have a fan belt because it's not a small-block Chevy. There's no fan. We have electric fans mounted on the radiator.

We're senative to noobs, don't worry... If you can see the belt (assuming the belt covers are on the motor still) it's not the timing belt. If that one goes, then the head/block timing goes crazy and could possibly break something. If you can see it, it's either the A/C & Power steering belt or alternator belt.

How many miles on the thing? Might be about time to replace them all since it's an '02! I've got my order in the mail right now for all 3 new belts and a new water pump for $103 from www.mr-auto-parts.com .

The car has 85,100 miles on it

Thanks for the link.

Here are pictures of what SEEMS to be the source of the sound, and theres also a video of it, and hopefully you can hear the sound from it... (link is at the bottom of the pics)

try putting "Belt Dressing" on it. They have it at walmart. Is makes slipping belts grip better and a little quiter. If you can still hear the sound, it may be your power steering pump or pulley. In that last pic you posted....thats the power steering pump.

edit: BTW, that belt dressing is just a foamy spray that you spray on the belts while the car is running. Takes like 30 seconds to use.

it may just be the power steering pump. Now that I think about it, I think my car makes that noise too.
